Basketball Stats Calculator

Basketball player statistics are expressed as per-game averages, which allow fair comparison between players with different numbers of games played. The three most tracked stats are points, rebounds, and assists per game.

The per-game average formula: Stat Per Game = Total Season Stat / Games Played

Points Per Game (PPG): PPG = Total Points / Games Played

Rebounds Per Game (RPG): RPG = (Offensive Rebounds + Defensive Rebounds) / Games Played

Assists Per Game (APG): APG = Total Assists / Games Played

Worked example: After 24 games, a player has 432 points, 198 rebounds (62 offensive + 136 defensive), and 96 assists. PPG = 432 / 24 = 18.0 points per game RPG = 198 / 24 = 8.25 rebounds per game APG = 96 / 24 = 4.0 assists per game

NBA Efficiency (EFF), the one this calculator computes:

EFF = (PTS + REB + AST + STL + BLK − missed FG − missed FT − TO) / Games

This is the league’s own official efficiency statistic, and it is deliberately simple: every good thing counts +1, every wasted possession counts −1. Missed shots are the part people forget, and they are what stops a volume scorer from topping the list on shot attempts alone. A 25-point night on 10 of 30 shooting loses 20 points of credit right back.

Roughly where EFF lands:

EFF is not PER. Player Efficiency Rating is John Hollinger’s pace-adjusted, minutes-normalised composite, calibrated so the league average is exactly 15.0 every season. EFF has no such normalisation and no pace adjustment, so an EFF of 15 and a PER of 15 mean completely different things. If you have seen “league average is 15.0” quoted, that is PER, and this page does not calculate it. PER needs league-wide pace and possession data that no box score contains.

Two other shooting measures worth knowing:

• Field Goal % (FG%): (Field Goals Made / Field Goals Attempted) × 100
• True Shooting % (TS%): Points / (2 × (FGA + 0.44 × FTA)), which folds free throws and three-pointers into one number

NBA career benchmarks (all-time greats):

• Michael Jordan: 30.1 PPG (career record), 6.2 RPG, 5.3 APG
• LeBron James: 27.1 PPG, 7.5 RPG, 7.4 APG
• An “All-Star caliber” season is generally considered: 20+ PPG, 5+ RPG, 5+ APG

Double-double: 10+ in two stat categories in one game. Triple-double: 10+ in three categories, which is rare and impressive.
