Run Rate & Projected Total

In cricket, run rate (also called runs per over or RPO) measures how quickly a batting side is scoring. It is the primary pacing metric in limited-overs cricket (One Day Internationals and T20 matches) and drives every strategic decision about batting aggression, field placement, and bowling changes.

Current Run Rate (CRR): CRR = Total Runs Scored / Overs Completed

Required Run Rate (RRR): RRR = Runs Still Needed / Overs Remaining

Worked example (ODI match, 50 overs per side): Team B needs to chase 287 runs. After 25 overs, they have scored 118.

CRR = 118 / 25 = 4.72 runs per over Runs still needed = 287 − 118 = 169 Overs remaining = 25 RRR = 169 / 25 = 6.76 runs per over

The team needs to lift its scoring rate from 4.72 to 6.76, which is a significant ask.

Overs are not decimals, and this trips up every spreadsheet

An over is six balls, so cricket writes 12 overs and 3 balls as 12.3. That looks like a decimal and is not one: 12.3 overs is twelve and a half overs, or 12.5 in real arithmetic. Only .0 through .5 exist, because .6 is a completed over.

Dividing runs by the printed figure gives the wrong run rate. At 87 runs off 12.3 overs the correct answer is 87 ÷ 12.5 = 6.96, not 87 ÷ 12.3 = 7.07. The gap is small in one innings and compounds across a tournament, which is why net run rate is computed from balls rather than from the printed overs. T20 example: Team B chases 178. After 10 overs, they have 74 runs. CRR = 74 / 10 = 7.4 runs per over RRR = (178 − 74) / 10 = 104 / 10 = 10.4 runs per over

Run rate benchmarks (T20 cricket):

  • Below 6.0 RPO: Very slow; almost certainly losing
  • 7.0–8.5 RPO: Competitive pace
  • 9.0–10.5 RPO: Strong scoring; under pressure
  • 12.0+ RPO: Exceptional hitting; last-over blitz territory

Net Run Rate (NRR), the tournament tiebreaker: NRR = (Total runs scored / total overs faced) − (Total runs conceded / total overs bowled)

NRR decides places when teams finish level on points in a group. Two details catch people out: a side bowled out before its full quota is charged the full allocation of overs rather than the ones it actually faced, and NRR is computed across the whole tournament rather than averaged per match. That is why a single heavy defeat can bury a team’s NRR for the rest of a group stage.
