Pool swim lap calculations convert laps swum into total distance, allowing swimmers to track workouts, set training targets, and compare performances across pools of different lengths.

Core formulas: Total Distance = Number of Laps × Lengths per Lap × Pool Length Number of Laps = Target Distance ÷ (Lengths per Lap × Pool Length)

Note on lap vs. length terminology: This is the one thing that makes swim distances confusing, and there is no settled answer.

  • A length = one pass from wall to wall.
  • A lap = two lengths (down and back) in everyday recreational usage, the same way a lap of a running track brings you back to where you started.
  • In competitive swimming and on most pool clocks, lap is used to mean a single length.

Rather than pick a side, the calculator asks. The dropdown defaults to the recreational “down and back” reading, and the worked example and the table below both use it. If your club counts single lengths, switch it and every number halves.

Standard pool lengths:

  • Short course (SC): 25 meters (most common for recreational and club swimming)
  • Long course (LC): 50 meters (Olympic standard)
  • Yards pool: 25 yards (common in the USA for high school and college)

What each variable means:

Pool Length is the measured distance from wall to wall in meters or yards.
Laps is what you counted, read according to the setting you chose.
Target Distance is the workout or race goal in meters, kilometers, or miles.

Common race distances and required laps by pool size (lap = down and back):

A 25-yard pool is 22.86 m, so it always takes more laps to cover a distance quoted in meters. That gap is why a “mile” swum in a yards pool is usually the 1,650-yard swimmers’ mile (33 laps) rather than the true 1,609 m.

Worked example: A triathlete is training for an Olympic-distance triathlon (1,500m swim). Their pool is 25 meters long.

Laps needed = 1,500 ÷ (25 × 2) = 1,500 ÷ 50 = 30 laps

If they complete the session in 35 minutes: Pace = 35 min ÷ 30 laps = 1:10 per lap = 2:20 per 100m (competitive recreational pace)

Count that same session as single lengths and it is 60 laps, which is the number the pace clock and most lap-counting watches will show you.

Training zones by pace (per 100m):

  • Easy / recovery: >2:30
  • Aerobic base: 2:00–2:30
  • Threshold: 1:40–2:00
  • Race pace (competitive amateur): 1:20–1:40
  • Elite: under 1:00
