Rugby Points Calculator

Rugby union and rugby league use different scoring systems. Understanding the point values for each scoring action is essential for calculating match totals and understanding game strategy.

Rugby Union scoring (15-a-side):

• Try: 5 points, for touching the ball down over the opponent’s try line
• Conversion: 2 points, a kick between the posts after a try, taken in line with where the try was scored
• Penalty goal: 3 points, a place or drop kick from a penalty award
• Drop goal: 3 points, dropped and kicked as it bounces, during open play
• Penalty try: 7 points, awarded when foul play prevents a probable try. Since 2017 there is no conversion attempt; the 7 is automatic

Rugby League scoring (13-a-side):

• Try: 4 points
• Conversion: 2 points
• Penalty goal: 2 points
• Drop goal: 1 point

Total score formula (Union): Score = (Tries × 5) + (Conversions × 2) + (Penalty Goals × 3) + (Drop Goals × 3)

Worked example (Union): Team A scores 3 tries (all converted) and 2 penalty goals: Score = (3 × 5) + (3 × 2) + (2 × 3) = 15 + 6 + 6 = 27 points

Typical final scores:

• Average winning score in international rugby union: 22–28 points
• Highest possible score from one visit to the try line: a converted try, 7 points
• A penalty-heavy match with few tries might end 18–12

Scores you will never see in union:

A union team’s points come in 3s (penalty or drop goal), 5s (unconverted try) and 7s (converted try). Work through the combinations and three totals turn out to be impossible: 1, 2 and 4. Everything from 3 upward is reachable except 4. A conversion cannot stand alone, which is what rules out 2.

Rugby league has no such gaps, because the drop goal is worth 1 and the penalty 2, so every total from 1 up is reachable.

Bonus points (league competitions): Many competitions award a bonus point for scoring 4+ tries in a match, or for losing by 7 points or fewer. These affect league table standings, not match scores.
