Snowboard size is primarily determined by rider weight, not height. A board that is too short will feel unstable at speed; too long and it becomes hard to turn and maneuver. Riding style further refines the choice.

Board length must support rider weight, so look for a board whose stated weight range includes yours.

Nose-to-Chin Height Check:
Stand the board vertically. It should reach somewhere between your chin and your nose. Shorter boards (chin or below) favor park and tricks; longer boards (nose or above) favor speed and powder.
For the arithmetic, an adult head runs about 23 cm from crown to chin, so your chin sits at roughly your height minus 23 cm and your nose at minus 14. On a 178 cm rider that is 155 to 164 cm, and the weight table above puts a 75 kg rider on a 155 cm board. The two rules agree, which is the point: if they did not, one of them would be wrong.
This check is a sanity test on the weight-based answer, not a replacement for it. Weight is what the board actually has to flex against; height only tells you whether the result will look and feel normal underfoot. When the two disagree, and they will for anyone unusually tall or short for their weight, trust the weight.

Worked Example:
Rider: 75 kg (165 lb), intermediate, prefers groomed runs and some park.
Base length (all-mountain) at 165 lb: 155 cm. Style adjustment (all-mountain): ±0 cm
Recommendation: 153–157 cm, so a 155 cm all-mountain board.
Pick freestyle instead and the same rider drops to 152 cm; pick freeride and they go to 158.

Toe drag is what these numbers exist to prevent. If your toe or heel hangs far enough over the edge to touch the snow mid-turn, the board catches and puts you down. A little overhang is fine and even desirable; a centimetre each side is not.
Practical Tips:
- Wider boards (W designation) are needed for boot sizes 11+ US
- Demo boards before buying, because feel matters as much as numbers
- A stiffer board rewards advanced riders; softer boards are more forgiving for beginners
- Reduced-footprint boots run roughly a size smaller in outsole length, which can keep you on a standard-width board
