Serve Effectiveness Analysis

This page scores one thing: how much your serve is helping you, measured from a single match’s service statistics. It is not a full match-analysis sheet. Winners, unforced errors and return points are all worth tracking, but they need data from the whole court, and none of them are inputs here.

Serve effectiveness

Serve Effectiveness % = (Aces − Double Faults) ÷ Total Service Points × 100

Subtracting double faults is the point of the metric. An ace and a double fault are the two outcomes where nobody else touches the ball, so they belong on the same ledger. A server who hits 12 aces and 11 double faults did not have a good serving day, and any statistic that reports only the aces will say otherwise.

Serve effectiveness What it looks like
Above 15% Tour-level big server. Isner and Karlovic territory.
8 to 15% Strong. Comfortably above the ATP average.
3 to 8% Solid. Roughly the men’s tour average.
0 to 3% Modest. Free points are rare but you are not giving them away.
Below 0% More double faults than aces. Fix the second serve first.

Women’s tour figures run several points lower across the board, so read the table as a men’s scale and shade it down.

Ace rate and double fault rate

Ace Rate % = Aces ÷ Total Service Points × 100, and the same shape for double faults. ATP averages sit near 8% for aces and 3 to 4% for double faults. Above 5% double faults is the number to worry about, because unlike a missing ace it is entirely inside your control.

First serve percentage

First Serve % = First Serves In ÷ Total Service Points × 100

Tour players hold 60 to 70%. Below 55% and your opponent gets to stand in on second serves all afternoon. Chasing a very high number is its own trap: 80% usually means the first serve has been slowed down to a rally ball, and the free points disappear with it.

Break points saved

BP Save % = Break Points Saved ÷ Break Points Faced × 100

This is the serving side of break points, not the returning side. Tour average is around 60%; the best servers save 65 to 70%. Note that facing very few break points is itself the strongest possible result, so read the rate alongside the raw count. Saving 2 of 2 is a small sample, not a talent.

Worked example

A three-set match, 110 service points, 10 aces, 3 double faults, 61.8% first serves in, 15 break points faced and 7 saved.

  • Serve effectiveness = (10 − 3) ÷ 110 = 6.4%, solid but not dominant
  • Ace rate = 10 ÷ 110 = 9.1%, slightly above tour average
  • Double fault rate = 3 ÷ 110 = 2.7%, good
  • First serve = 61.8%, right in the healthy band
  • Break points saved = 7 of 15 = 46.7%, the weak spot in an otherwise decent serving day

Those five lines are exactly what the calculator returns for those inputs. The story they tell is a serve that wins ordinary points fine and then stops producing under pressure, which is a coaching problem rather than a technique problem.
