Rowing Performance Metrics

Rowing pace (also called split pace) is the time required to row 500 meters and is the universal standard for measuring speed on rowing ergometers (Concept2 ergs) and on the water. All rowing workouts, race comparisons, and rankings use this metric.

Core pace formula: Split Pace (min:sec per 500m) = Total Time / (Total Distance / 500)

Rearranged, to get the time for a distance: Total Time = Split Pace × (Distance / 500)

Speed conversion: Speed (m/s) = 500 / Split Pace (seconds) Speed (km/h) = Speed (m/s) × 3.6

Power and pace relationship (Concept2 formula): Power (watts) = 2.80 / (Split Pace in seconds / 500)³

Or equivalently: Split Pace (sec/500m) = ∛(2.80 / Watts) × 500

This cubic relationship means small pace improvements require disproportionately large power increases. Going from 2:10 to 2:00 split requires significantly more wattage than going from 3:00 to 2:50.

Worked example: A rower completes 10,000 meters in 42 minutes. Split = 42 / (10,000 / 500) = 42 / 20 = 2:06 per 500m Speed = 500 / 126 sec = 3.97 m/s = 14.3 km/h Power = 2.80 / (126/500)³ = 2.80 / 0.016003 = 175 watts

Calorie calculation (Concept2 formula): Calories/hour = (Watts × 4 × 0.8604) + 300 At 175W: (175 × 3.4416) + 300 = 902 kcal/hour

The 0.8604 in there is the part almost every rowing site drops, and leaving it out inflates the burn by about 12%. It converts the machine’s work output into dietary calories at a realistic gross efficiency. The 300 is your resting metabolism, which the erg adds because you would be burning it sitting still anyway.
