In rowing, “split time” refers to the time it takes to row 500 meters. It is the standard pace unit in both on-water racing and ergometer (rowing machine) training, and it is to rowing what pace per kilometer is to running.
Why 500 Meters?
The 500m split has been the standard since the early days of indoor rowing machines (ergometers). It fits neatly as one-quarter of the standard 2,000m race distance, the Olympic standard for most rowing events. Splits held over a full 2,000m test:

The Split Calculation
For a known total time and distance: Split (min/500m) = (Total Time in seconds / Total Distance in meters) × 500
For a known split and distance: Total Time = (Split in seconds / 500) × Total Distance in meters
Stroke Rate and Power
Stroke rate (strokes per minute, SPM) affects split time. More powerful strokes at a lower rate can be more efficient than many weak strokes at a high rate. Elite rowers typically race at 32–38 SPM while recreational rowers work at 18–26 SPM.
Split to Watts
The Concept2 monitor derives power from pace with a cubic relationship:
Watts = 2.80 / (Split seconds / 500)³
A 2:00 split is 203 watts, 1:50 is 263, and 1:40 is 350. Ten seconds off your split near the 2:00 mark costs 30% more power, which is why splits stop dropping so easily once you are fit.
Negative splitting a piece
Rowers usually plan a piece as an even split, then aim to finish under it. A 1% negative split means rowing the first half a shade over your target and the second half a shade under, so the two average out. On a 2,000m at 1:50 that is roughly 1:51.1 for the first 1,000m and 1:48.9 for the second. The calculator prints both halves for whatever pace you enter.
Taking it off the erg
