Strength Standards by Body Weight

Strength standards help you assess where you stand compared to other lifters at your bodyweight and training experience level. These benchmarks are commonly used in powerlifting and general strength training communities.

How Strength Is Measured Relative to Bodyweight

Lifting strength is often expressed as a ratio of lifted weight to body weight:

Strength Ratio = Weight Lifted ÷ Body Weight

A squat of 1.5× bodyweight is the intermediate mark for men, and 1.0× for women.

Level Definitions

The names come from how long the typical lifter takes to get there, but this calculator assigns them purely from your ratio. Those two things can disagree, and when they do the ratio is the honest answer. A naturally strong newcomer really can out-lift someone with three years of training behind them.

  • Beginner: roughly the first 6 months of consistent training
  • Novice: 6 months to 2 years
  • Intermediate: 2–5 years of consistent training
  • Advanced: 5 years or more with structured programming
  • Elite: competitive powerlifting level

What the ratio does and does not account for

Dividing by bodyweight is a rough correction, not a complete one. Strength does not scale linearly with mass, so lighter lifters reach higher ratios than heavier ones at the same competitive standard. A 60 kg lifter squatting 2.5× bodyweight and a 120 kg lifter doing the same are not equally impressive, and the heavier one is the rarer feat. For a proper cross-weight comparison use a coefficient built for the job, such as the Wilks score.

Proportions matter too. Long femurs make squatting harder, long arms make benching harder and deadlifting easier, and a tall lifter fights a longer bar path on overhead press. None of that shows up in a ratio.
