Bench press strength standards answer the only question anyone really asks in a gym: is this number any good? The honest answer depends on what you weigh, because a 60 kg lifter and a 110 kg lifter pressing the same bar are not doing the same thing.

Those bodyweight multiples are the ones you see quoted everywhere, and they are correct at around 180 lb. What almost nobody mentions is that they do not hold at other bodyweights, and this calculator adjusts them.
Why heavier lifters have lower multiples
Muscle force scales with cross-sectional area, which grows as the square of a linear dimension, while bodyweight grows as the cube. Work that through and strength scales with roughly bodyweight to the two-thirds power, so the bench-per-kilo figure falls as bodyweight rises. It is the same relationship behind the Wilks and IPF GL coefficients that let powerlifters of different sizes compete against one another.
The practical effect is large. Applying the exponent to the 1.00× intermediate anchor gives about 1.11× at 60 kg and 0.88× at 120 kg. A 120 kg lifter pressing bodyweight is comfortably past intermediate; a 60 kg lifter pressing bodyweight has not quite got there. A flat table tells both of them the same thing and is wrong about both.
This is an estimate, not a certification. Standards published by different gyms and federations disagree by 10 to 15% at every level, and none of them account for arm length, which matters more for bench press than for any other lift. Long arms mean a longer bar path and a genuinely harder lift at the same muscle mass.
Testing safely
Do not chase a true one-rep max to find out where you sit. Take a weight you can move for 3 to 5 clean reps and estimate from there, which is what the One Rep Max calculator is for. It is more accurate than a grinding single, and nobody has ever been pinned under an estimate.
If you do test heavy: warm up through roughly 50%, 70% and 85% singles, use a spotter, and never use collars-off tricks as a substitute for one. Retest every four to six weeks. Strength moves slowly enough that weekly testing measures your sleep and caffeine intake more than your training.
