Disc golf disc selection depends on matching disc speed to your arm speed. Throwing a disc too fast for your arm results in poor flight.

Disc flight numbers: Speed / Glide / Turn / Fade

  • Speed (1–14): Required arm speed to achieve proper flight
  • Glide (1–7): How long the disc stays in the air
  • Turn (−5 to +1): High-speed curve (negative = right turn for RHBH)
  • Fade (0–5): Low-speed hook at end of flight (left for RHBH)

Disc classes by speed rating:

Speed Class What it does
1–3 Putt and approach Slow, straight, lands soft. Used inside 100 ft
4–5 Midrange Controlled, predictable. The workhorse of an accurate bag
6–8 Fairway driver Narrower rim, more distance, still throwable at moderate power
9–14 Distance driver Wide rim, needs real arm speed or it never turns over

Tips:

  • Start with understable discs (negative turn). They are more forgiving
  • Lighter discs (150–165g) are easier to throw far for beginners
  • Use putters and midranges to develop form before drivers
  • A well-thrown Speed 7 disc goes farther than a poorly-thrown Speed 13

Why an overpowered disc actually loses you distance

This is the part almost everyone gets wrong, and it is worth understanding before you spend money. A disc’s speed rating is not a measure of how fast the disc flies. It is the arm speed the rim shape needs to fly the way it was designed to. Throw a Speed 13 driver at Speed 9 arm speed and the disc never reaches the point where the wide rim starts working for you. It skips straight to the fade phase and hooks hard to the ground, often 60 or 70 feet short of where a Speed 8 disc would have landed.

The other half of the problem is that a disc you cannot power up is also a disc you cannot control. The hook is not just short, it is sideways, so the miss goes off the fairway rather than down it.

Two rules of thumb that survive contact with an actual course. Buy the fastest disc you can throw flat and hold straight for the first half of its flight, and no faster. And if you are still building form, spend a season with a putter, a midrange and one fairway driver. Most players who add a distance driver too early end up throwing it 20 feet shorter than their fairway and never notice, because they only compare it against their own bad throws.

Weight matters less than speed, but it matters. A lighter disc in the same mould needs less power to reach its designed flight, which is why the 150 class exists. The trade is wind: light discs get pushed around badly in a headwind, so keep at least one heavy overstable disc in the bag for those days.
