Average speed is not top speed, and the gap is large. Every sprint starts from a standstill, so the figure above is your average over the whole run. Bolt’s 9.58 works out to 10.44 m/s (37.6 km/h) on average, but his peak between 60 and 80 metres was 12.42 m/s (44.72 km/h). That is a 19% difference on the same run. Any comparison worth making puts average against average, which is what this page does.
Common Sprint Distances: The 100-meter dash is the standard sprint event in track and field. Usain Bolt set the world record at 9.58 seconds in Berlin, Germany in 2009.
The 40-yard dash (36.58 meters) is the standard speed test in American football. For a wide receiver or cornerback the elite bar is under 4.4 seconds, while linemen are judged on a scale two-thirds of a second slower. The combine record is 4.21 seconds, set by Xavier Worthy in 2024, edging out the 4.22 John Ross ran in 2017.
One thing to know before comparing numbers across events: a combine 40 is timed from the athlete’s first movement, while a track 100 m includes reaction time off the blocks, roughly 0.15 seconds of it. The standards below follow each event’s own convention, which is what you want, but it does mean the two are not on quite the same clock.
The 200-meter sprint adds a curve component. Usain Bolt holds the world record at 19.19 seconds, also set in 2009.
Why a short dash does not scale up: Scaling a 40-yard time straight to 100 metres by multiplying gives a badly pessimistic answer, because the dash is almost all acceleration and never reaches full speed. A 4.40 dash multiplies out to about 12.0 seconds for 100 m, yet the athletes who run 4.40 typically clock 10.6 to 10.9. This page corrects for that instead of scaling linearly, so a 40-yard time is rated against 40-yard standards.

Factors Affecting Sprint Speed: Wind conditions, running surface, footwear, altitude, temperature, and fatigue all influence sprint times. Official records require a tailwind under 2.0 m/s. Hand timing typically reads about 0.24 seconds faster than a fully automatic clock, which is why old high-school personal bests so often refuse to survive contact with electronic timing.
