DOTS Formula:

DOTS = Total (kg) × 500 / (A × bw⁴ + B × bw³ + C × bw² + D × bw + E)

Where:

  • Total = your combined squat, bench press, and deadlift in kilograms
  • bw = your body weight in kilograms
  • A, B, C, D, E = polynomial coefficients that differ for male and female lifters. These constants were derived from statistical analysis of competition data to create a fair comparison curve across all body weights.

The DOTS formula normalizes your total by dividing it by a body-weight-dependent polynomial. This produces a score that allows fair comparison between lifters of very different body weights.

Where DOTS came from, and who actually uses it

DOTS was built by Tim Konertz for the German federation (BVDK) around 2019 as a refit of the Wilks curve against modern competition data. USA Powerlifting adopted it in 2020, and it is now the default on most meet software outside the IPF.

The International Powerlifting Federation went a different way. It dropped Wilks in 2019 for its own IPF Points, then replaced those with IPF GL Points in 2020, which are fitted separately for raw and equipped lifting. So if you compete in an IPF affiliate, your official coefficient is GL, not DOTS. Plenty of lifters track both.

The complaint about Wilks (1994) was that it undervalued the very light and the very heavy, having been fitted to a much smaller and older pool of results. DOTS uses a 4th-degree polynomial where Wilks used a 5th-degree one, and the flatter curve at the extremes is the whole point of the change.

Practical Example: A male lifter weighing 82 kg with a total of 520 kg (200 squat + 130 bench + 190 deadlift): The polynomial denominator for 82 kg evaluates to 735.58. DOTS = 520 x 500 / 735.58 = 353.5 (Intermediate level) To reach Advanced (400), this lifter would need a total of 588 kg, which is 68 kg more.

That last figure is worth sitting with. Adding 68 kg to a 520 total is roughly two years of honest training for most intermediates, and the DOTS number barely moves in the first six months of it. The score is deliberately unforgiving in the middle of the curve, which is where nearly everyone lives.

A note on very light and very heavy lifters: the polynomial is only fitted over the range real competitors occupy. Outside roughly 40 to 210 kg for men and 40 to 150 kg for women the curve stops describing anything, and past about 270 kg the women’s denominator goes negative and the score turns to nonsense. This calculator clamps the body weight it feeds the formula to those limits and tells you when it has done so.

Tips:

  • Enter your best competition lifts, not gym PRs. Competition standards require deeper squats and paused bench presses
  • If you only know your lifts in pounds, the calculator converts automatically
  • DOTS and Wilks scores are usually close for lifters between 65-100 kg, but diverge more at extreme body weights
  • Track your DOTS score over time to measure progress independent of body weight changes
