Soccer Field Size Calculator
Calculate soccer field dimensions, goal size, and penalty area for any age group from U6 youth to FIFA adult standards in meters and yards.
Soccer field (pitch) dimensions vary based on age group and competition level. FIFA, the international governing body, specifies ranges rather than exact dimensions, allowing flexibility for different venues. Understanding the correct field size is important for coaches, facility managers, and league organizers.
FIFA Official Dimensions (adult, international matches):
| Measurement | Minimum | Maximum | Recommended |
|---|---|---|---|
| Length | 110 yd (100 m) | 120 yd (110 m) | 115 yd (105 m) |
| Width | 70 yd (64 m) | 80 yd (73 m) | 74 yd (68 m) |
| Total area | 7,700 sq yd | 9,600 sq yd | 8,510 sq yd |
International Match Requirement: FIFA mandates that fields for international competitions be 110–120 yards (100–110 m) long and 70–80 yards (64–73 m) wide. The most common dimensions used in major tournaments such as the World Cup are 115 × 74 yards (105 × 68 meters).
Youth Field Dimensions (US Soccer recommended):
| Age Group | Length | Width |
|---|---|---|
| U6 (4v4) | 25–30 yd (23–27 m) | 15–20 yd (14–18 m) |
| U8 (4v4) | 25–35 yd (23–32 m) | 15–25 yd (14–23 m) |
| U10 (7v7) | 55–65 yd (50–60 m) | 35–45 yd (32–41 m) |
| U12 (9v9) | 70–80 yd (64–73 m) | 45–55 yd (41–50 m) |
| U14+ (11v11) | 100–110 yd (91–100 m) | 55–70 yd (50–64 m) |
| Adult (11v11) | 100–130 yd (91–119 m) | 50–100 yd (46–91 m) |
Standard Field Markings: All markings are part of the area they define and must be uniform in width (5 inches / 12 cm).
| Marking | Dimensions |
|---|---|
| Center circle | 10 yd (9.15 m) radius |
| Penalty area | 18 yd (16.5 m) from each goalpost, 18 yd deep |
| Goal area (6-yard box) | 6 yd (5.5 m) from each goalpost, 6 yd deep |
| Penalty spot | 12 yd (11 m) from goal line |
| Penalty arc | 10 yd (9.15 m) from penalty spot |
| Corner arc | 1 yd (1 m) radius |
| Goal size (adult) | 8 yd (7.32 m) wide × 8 ft (2.44 m) high |
Youth Goal Sizes:
| Age Group | Goal Width | Goal Height |
|---|---|---|
| U6–U8 | 12 ft (3.66 m) | 6 ft (1.83 m) |
| U10 | 18.5 ft (5.64 m) | 6.5 ft (1.98 m) |
| U12 | 21 ft (6.40 m) | 7 ft (2.13 m) |
| U14+ | 24 ft (7.32 m) | 8 ft (2.44 m) |
The 7v7, 9v9 and 11v11 rows are the US Soccer Player Development Initiatives sizes and are consistent nationwide. The 4v4 row is the size most recreational leagues actually put on the field, which is larger than the 4 ft by 6 ft pop-up goal the PDI recommends. Check what your club owns before buying nets.
Small-sided markings (US Soccer): Small-sided fields are not simply full fields shrunk down. The 7v7 game adds a build-out line halfway between the penalty area and the halfway line: the defending team must retreat behind it on a goal kick or a goalkeeper possession, which is what stops ten-year-olds from lumping the ball downfield and pressing the keeper.
| Format | Penalty area | Penalty spot | Center circle |
|---|---|---|---|
| 4v4 (U6–U8) | none, no goalkeepers | none | 4–5 yd radius |
| 7v7 (U9–U10) | 24 × 8 yd | 8 yd | 8 yd radius |
| 9v9 (U11–U12) | 36 × 14 yd | 10 yd | 8 yd radius |
| 11v11 (U13+) | 44 × 18 yd | 12 yd | 10 yd radius |
Area Calculations:
Field Area = Length × Width
Penalty Area = 44 yd × 18 yd = 792 sq yd (one end)
Center Circle Area = π × 10² = 314 sq yd
Grass and Maintenance Notes: A professional soccer field requires approximately 2–3 inches (5–7.5 cm) of grass height, regular mowing, proper drainage, and periodic aeration. The playing surface should be level with a maximum 1% slope from center to sidelines for drainage. Line marking paint should be non-toxic and biodegradable.
Metric vs. Imperial: Soccer is an international sport, and FIFA specifications are given in metric. The yard measurements used in this calculator are common in the United States and United Kingdom. Since 1 yard (0.9144 m) and 1 meter are close in length, approximate conversions work well for practical field setup.
