Fishing line selection involves matching your line’s breaking strength (test weight), diameter, and material properties to the target species, fishing conditions, and technique being used.

The general sizing principle: For most freshwater and inshore fishing, line test lands at or above the weight of the fish you expect, and often well above it. A 5 lb bass is routinely landed on 12 to 20 lb line. That sounds like overkill until you remember what the line is really fighting: a hook set through a bony jaw, a fish that dives into a brush pile, and abrasion against everything it drags you past. The fish’s dead weight is the smallest load the line ever sees.

The exception is big-game and record fishing, where line class is deliberately light relative to the fish. An IGFA 130 lb class line is used on tuna many times that weight, because there the drag system and hours of rod work do the job the line cannot. That style needs a fighting chair, a skilled crew and real technique, and it is not what most people mean when they ask what line to spool.

This calculator follows the first convention. Beginners get a heavier recommendation than advanced anglers on the same fish, because a beginner sets the hook harder, plays the fish faster, and checks the line for nicks less often.

Line types and their characteristics:

Diameter matters: thinner line:

  • Casts farther
  • Sinks faster (better jigging)
  • Holds more line on the spool
  • Is less visible to fish

Braided line is roughly 3 to 4 times stronger than monofilament of the same diameter. A 20 lb braid runs about the thickness of 6 lb mono, and 50 lb braid about the thickness of 12 lb.

Leader considerations: When using braided line, attaching a fluorocarbon leader (3–6 ft / 1–2 m) offers:

  • Near-invisible presentation at the lure
  • Abrasion resistance against rocks, teeth, and structure
  • Shock absorption (braid has no stretch for hook-sets)

Knot strength: the weakest link: Most line failures occur at the knot, not along the line itself. Poorly tied knots retain only 50–75% of line strength. The Palomar knot is widely considered the most reliable: it retains 95–100% of line strength with braided and monofilament line.

Worked example: Targeting largemouth bass in heavy lily pad cover:

  • Expected fish: 3–6 lbs
  • Cover: thick vegetation (requires strong hookset, line must resist abrasion)
  • Recommendation: 30–50 lb braid (diameter of ~10 lb mono) with a 20 lb fluorocarbon leader
  • The braid provides zero-stretch hooksets through the pads; the fluoro leader provides abrasion resistance
