How Ski Boot Size Is Calculated

Ski boots use the Mondopoint system, a measurement in millimeters of the foot’s actual length. This is different from US, UK, or EU shoe sizes.

Mondopoint Formula: Mondo Size = Foot Length in mm ÷ 10

US to Mondo Conversions (approximate):

  • US Men’s 7 → Mondo 25.0
  • US Men’s 9 → Mondo 27.0
  • US Men’s 11 → Mondo 29.0
  • US Women’s 7 → Mondo 24.0
  • US Women’s 9 → Mondo 26.0

How to Measure Your Foot:

  1. Stand on a piece of paper with weight fully on that foot
  2. Trace your foot outline
  3. Measure the longest distance from heel to longest toe (in mm)
  4. Divide by 10, and that is your Mondo size

Worked Example: Foot length measures 278 mm.

  • Mondo size = 278 ÷ 10 = 27.8 → fits a 28.0 boot

The half-size trick nobody tells you. Ski boot shells come in whole centimetres. A 26.5 and a 27.0 are the same plastic shell with a slightly thicker liner in the smaller one. That means going down half a size costs you nothing in shell length, and it is the cheapest way to tighten a sloppy fit. It also means that if a 27.0 is too tight, a 27.5 will not help you; you need the 28.0 shell.

Last width:

Foot shape Last width
Narrow 96–98 mm
Medium / average 99–101 mm
Wide 102–104 mm
Extra wide 105 mm and up

Flex index:

Ability Flex
Beginner 60–80
Intermediate 80–100
Advanced 100–120
Expert / racer 120–140

Flex numbers are not standardised between brands, so a 110 from one manufacturer can feel like a 100 from another. Body weight shifts the whole scale too: a 100 kg intermediate wants a stiffer boot than a 55 kg intermediate, because flex is a measure of resistance to a load and they are not applying the same load.

Fit Tips:

  • Ski boots should feel snug, with toes barely touching the front when standing upright
  • When you flex forward into skiing position, toes should pull back and feel comfortable
  • Heat-moldable liners and shells reduce break-in time from weeks to minutes
  • Always measure both feet and fit to the larger one
