Badminton Stats Calculator

Badminton match statistics quantify performance across a match or a season. This calculator works from a scoresheet you can actually keep during a game: rallies won, rallies lost, and how many of your winners came from each of the three attacking shots.

Rally Win Rate = Rallies Won ÷ Total Rallies × 100

That single number predicts the result of a match better than anything else you can count courtside. Because a rally is either won or lost, 50% is a dead heat with your opponent, and the useful range is narrow. Two or three points of rally win rate is the difference between losing 21-15 and winning it.

Winner distribution = each shot’s winners ÷ all winners you counted × 100

Note what this is and is not. It is the share of your winning shots that came from the smash, the drop and the net. It is not a success rate, because a scoresheet does not record how many smashes you played and lost. A player who smashes forty times and wins ten still shows 100% smash share if the smash was their only winner, and that player has a problem the share cannot see.

Reading the shot mix

Worked example, singles

Player A wins 21-15, 18-21, 21-17. Total points across the three games: 60 to 53, so 113 rallies.

Rally Win Rate = 60 ÷ 113 × 100 = 53.1%, which is above the 52% competitive mark.

Of those 60 points, 24 were smash winners, 12 were drop winners, and 8 were net kills. That is 44 winners in total, so the smash share is 24 ÷ 44 = 54.5%, drops 27.3%, net 18.2%. The other 16 points came from opponent errors, and they count on the scoreboard exactly the same.

Benchmark rally win rates (BWF World Tour standard):

• Below 48%: you lost, and by more than the score suggests
• 48 to 52%: evenly matched, decided by a handful of rallies
• Above 52%: competitive advantage
• Above 55%: elite, a scoreline that rarely goes to three games

What this calculator does not track

Unforced error rate (errors ÷ total rallies, below 15% is elite) and first service in-rate (above 90% at every level) both need a second person marking a sheet, which is why they are not inputs here. If you have a coach counting, those two are the next numbers worth having.
