Calories burned swimming depend on the stroke used, intensity, body weight, and duration. Swimming is one of the most effective full-body exercises, burning significant calories while being low-impact on joints.

Where these numbers come from, and where they do not. The Compendium of Physical Activities is the reference table researchers use, and for most strokes it gives exactly two entries: a recreational one and a training or competition one. Those are the light and vigorous columns above. The moderate column is interpolated, because a great deal of real swimming happens between “pottering about” and “racing” and the Compendium has nothing there. Butterfly is the exception worth flagging: it has a single Compendium entry, 13.8, on the reasonable assumption that nobody swims butterfly leisurely for an hour. Its light and moderate figures here are this page’s own interpolation for the way most people actually use it, in short bursts inside a longer session.

The recreational-to-training gap is bigger than the gap between strokes. Breaststroke almost doubles, 5.3 to 10.3. Backstroke does the same, 4.8 to 9.5. The reason is the glide: a relaxed breaststroke has a genuine rest phase in every cycle, and racing it removes that rest entirely. So picking the wrong intensity column costs you a factor of two, which is far more than you would gain or lose by switching stroke. Be honest about how hard you were actually going, and the stroke matters much less than you would think.

Why swimming burns what it does:

  1. Water is around 800 times denser than air, so every movement meets real resistance
  2. Holding core temperature in cool water costs energy on its own
  3. Nearly every major muscle group is working at the same time
  4. Buoyancy takes the load off your joints, so you last longer than you would running

Swimming vs other exercises (per hour, 155 lb person):

  • Swimming, moderate freestyle: 584 cal
  • Running at 6 mph: 689 cal
  • Cycling at 12 to 14 mph: 562 cal
  • Walking at 3.5 mph: 302 cal

Swimming does not out-burn running per hour unless you are swimming hard. What it does is let you keep going on days when your joints would not tolerate the running.

Factors affecting calorie burn:

  • Water temperature: below about 78°F (26°C) the burn rises 10 to 30% as your body works to stay warm. This is real, and it is why an outdoor swim in May feels harder than the same distance in an August pool.
  • Efficiency: getting better at swimming makes it a worse calorie burner per length and a much better one per hour, because you waste less energy per stroke but can keep going far longer. Per hour is the number that matters.
  • Intervals: alternating fast and slow lengths burns more than holding one steady pace.

The appetite problem. Swimming raises appetite more than most exercise, and cold water makes it worse. An hour of steady freestyle for a 155 lb swimmer is about 584 calories, which a post-swim muffin and a smoothie will undo before you reach the car park. None of the arithmetic on this page survives contact with eating the calories back, and that, rather than choice of stroke, is what decides whether swimming shows up on a scale.
