Swimming Splits

Swimming split times let you and your coach see whether the pace held. Going out too fast is the single most common way a good swim falls apart, and splits are how you catch it.

Key swimming metrics:

  • Pace per 100 m or yd is the standard unit for swim speed
  • Split time is the time for one lap, or for any named portion of the distance
  • Negative split means the second half is quicker than the first, which is the strategy this page gives you a target for
  • SWOLF adds strokes per length to seconds per length. It is an efficiency score rather than a speed one, and it needs a stroke count this calculator does not ask for

Formula: Pace per 100 = Total time / (Total distance / 100) Split time per lap = Pace per 100 × (Lap distance / 100)

Pace reference for recreational to competitive swimmers:

The bands do not overlap, which sounds like a small thing but matters: a table where “competitive” runs 1:05 to 1:25 and “college” runs 0:50 to 1:10 cannot tell you which one a 1:08 belongs in. Yard times look faster for the same speed, so divide a per-100-yard pace by 0.9144 before comparing it here.

Practical example: A swimmer targeting 5:30 for 400 meters would need a pace of 1:22.5 per 100 m. In a 25 m pool (16 laps), each lap should take about 20.6 seconds.

Tips:

  • In a 25 m pool, turns add about 1–2 seconds per 100 m compared to a 50 m pool.
  • Open water swimming is typically 5–15% slower than pool times due to currents, sighting, and no walls.
  • Even or slight negative splits produce the best race results.
  • Use a tempo trainer (beeping device) to maintain consistent pace during training.
