Steps to Distance Calculator
Convert a step count to distance walked from your step length, with calories burned and walking time.
Shows miles, kilometers, feet and meters.
A step counter gives you raw step counts, but the numbers that actually matter for health are distance walked and calories burned. Converting steps to those needs two personal inputs: how far you travel per step, and your body weight.
Step length, not stride length. This trips up almost everybody, and it is a factor of two.
A step is one footfall to the next, left to right.
A stride is a full cycle, left heel to the next left heel, which is two steps.
Pedometers and phones count steps, so the number you multiply by is your step length. If you multiply a step count by a stride length you get double the distance you actually walked.
Formula, steps to distance: Distance = Steps × Step Length
Formula, calories burned walking: Net calories = Body Weight (kg) × Distance (km) × 0.57
That 0.57 is the extra energy walking costs above simply being alive. You will also see the shortcut calories ≈ steps × 0.04, which lands near 400 for 10,000 steps rather than the 300 the formula above gives. Neither is wrong. The shortcut counts gross energy, including the calories you would have burned sitting on the sofa for the same hour and a half. The per-km formula counts only what the walk added. Fitness trackers usually report the gross figure, which is part of why their numbers look generous.
What each variable means:
- Step Length - average values are about 2.2 ft (67 cm) for women and 2.5 ft (76 cm) for men. Measure yours by walking 10 steps and dividing the distance by 10.
- Body Weight - heavier people burn more per step, because there is more mass to move.
- MET (Metabolic Equivalent of Task) - walking at 3 mph is about 3.5 MET. MET × body weight (kg) × hours = gross calories.
Worked example: Person: 75 kg, step length 75 cm (0.75 m), walks 10,000 steps.
Distance = 10,000 × 0.75 m = 7,500 m = 7.5 km (4.66 miles) Net calories = 75 × 7.5 × 0.57 = 321 calories
Reference values:
- 2,000 steps ≈ 1 mile for most people, which works out to a 2.64 ft step
- 10,000 steps ≈ 4–5 miles
- Walking burns roughly 80–100 gross calories per mile for a 155 lb person
- 10,000 steps a day is the famous target, though it came from a 1960s Japanese pedometer’s brand name rather than from research. The evidence points lower: most of the mortality benefit shows up by 7,000–8,000 steps, and the curve flattens after that
