Screen Viewing Distance Calculator
Find the ideal viewing distance for your TV, monitor, or phone based on screen size and type.
Reduce eye strain with proper positioning.
Optimal viewing distance depends on screen size, resolution, and type. Too close causes eye strain; too far reduces detail visibility.
General formulas:
TV (4K UHD):
Distance = Screen size × 1.0 to 1.5
TV (1080p HD):
Distance = Screen size × 1.5 to 2.5
Computer monitor (desk work):
Distance = 20 to 40 inches (50 to 100 cm) — at arm’s length
Phone:
Distance = 12 to 16 inches (30 to 40 cm)
Common recommendations:
| Screen Size | 4K TV | 1080p TV |
|---|---|---|
| 43 in | 3.5–5.5 ft | 5.5–9 ft |
| 55 in | 4.5–7 ft | 7–11.5 ft |
| 65 in | 5.5–8 ft | 8–13.5 ft |
| 75 in | 6.5–9.5 ft | 9.5–15.5 ft |
Eye health tips:
- Follow the 20-20-20 rule: Every 20 minutes, look at something 20 feet away for 20 seconds
- Position the monitor so the top is at or below eye level
