Chord Notes

Chords are built by stacking intervals on top of a root note. Each chord type has a specific formula of semitone intervals.

Chord formulas (semitones from root):

  • Major: 0, 4, 7
  • Minor: 0, 3, 7
  • Diminished: 0, 3, 6
  • Augmented: 0, 4, 8
  • Major 7th: 0, 4, 7, 11
  • Minor 7th: 0, 3, 7, 10
  • Dominant 7th: 0, 4, 7, 10
  • Suspended 2nd (sus2): 0, 2, 7
  • Suspended 4th (sus4): 0, 5, 7
  • Power (5th): 0, 7

The chromatic scale: C, C#, D, D#, E, F, F#, G, G#, A, A#, B

Example — C Major: Start on C (0), go up 4 semitones (E), go up 7 semitones (G) → C, E, G

Example — A Minor 7th: Start on A (0), +3 (C), +7 (E), +10 (G) → A, C, E, G
