BPM (beats per minute) is the universal measure of musical tempo. This calculator lets you tap to detect BPM, or enter a known BPM to find the duration of each beat and common musical subdivisions.

Tap tempo method: Tap at least 4 beats, calculate average interval between taps, then: BPM = 60,000 / avg_interval_ms

Worked example: Tap intervals: 498 ms, 503 ms, 501 ms, 499 ms → Average: 500.25 ms BPM = 60,000 / 500.25 ≈ 119.9 BPM (effectively 120 BPM)

The boundaries are conventions rather than laws, and different editions disagree by a few beats either way. Treat them as labels, not verdicts. The calculator uses exactly the ranges above, so the name it reports and the row you find here will always agree, and so do the Tempo Converter and the metronome calculator.

Getting a reading you can trust

Two taps give you a number, but not a good one. A single mistimed tap is the whole measurement when there is only one interval to average. Four taps is where the reading settles down, eight is better, and the calculator starts reporting how steady you were once it has four to work with.

That steadiness figure is the standard deviation of your tap intervals in milliseconds. Under 15 ms is genuinely tight. Over 80 ms and the average is being pulled around by your own inconsistency rather than by the music, so it is worth starting again. Tapping on the downbeat of every other bar instead of every beat is a common fix for fast tempos, then doubling the result.

Delay time sync: At 120 BPM, a quarter-note delay = 500 ms. Syncing delay and reverb times to your BPM keeps effects rhythmically locked to the music.
