Tempo Details

BPM (Beats Per Minute) is the standard measure of musical tempo. This calculator converts BPM into precise timing values for every note subdivision, the numbers musicians, producers, and sound engineers reach for when setting delay times or programming a sequencer.

Formulas:

Beat duration (ms) = 60,000 / BPM

Measure duration (ms) = Quarter Notes Per Measure × (60,000 / BPM)

What each variable means:

  • BPM is the number of beats that occur in one minute. A higher BPM means faster music.
  • Quarter Notes Per Measure is how much musical time one bar holds. In 4/4 (most common) that is 4, and in 3/4 (waltz) it is 3.

The 6/8 trap

BPM counts quarter notes, in this calculator and in every DAW. The top number of the time signature only tells you how many quarter notes are in a bar when the bottom number is 4.

A 6/8 bar holds six eighth notes, and six eighths are three quarter notes, so 6/8 goes in the box as 3, not 6. Treat the 6 as beats and every measure comes out twice as long as it really is. Pick 6 only for 6/4. The Loop Length Calculator works the same way and takes the signature directly if you would rather not do the conversion.

Note subdivision durations (all derived from the quarter note):

  • Half note = beat duration × 2
  • Dotted quarter = beat duration × 1.5
  • Eighth note = beat duration / 2
  • Sixteenth note = beat duration / 4
  • Triplet quarter = beat duration × 2/3

No two sources agree on these boundaries to the beat, and historical usage drifted as well. The set above is the one every tempo page on this site uses, so the word you get here is the word you get from the Tempo Converter and the BPM tap tempo page too. When a score prints a metronome mark, the number wins over the word.

Practical example: At 120 BPM, the beat duration = 60,000 / 120 = 500 ms. A full measure in 4/4 time = 4 × 500 = 2,000 ms (2 seconds). An eighth note = 250 ms, and a sixteenth note = 125 ms.

When to use this calculator: Use it when setting delay or reverb times in a DAW (digital audio workstation) to sync effects with your song’s tempo. Also useful for practice, since knowing the exact millisecond timing helps when programming drum machines or sequencers. Composers use it to convert between Italian tempo markings and exact BPM values.
