Speaker wattage and room acoustics are closely linked. A speaker’s power rating determines maximum volume, but the room size, shape, and acoustic treatment determine how that power translates to perceived loudness.
SPL (Sound Pressure Level) formula:
SPL (dB) = Sensitivity (dB/1W/1m) + 10 × log₁₀(Power in Watts) − 20 × log₁₀(Distance in metres)
Rearranged for what you actually want to know:
Watts = 10 ^ ((Target SPL − Sensitivity + 20 × log₁₀(Distance)) ÷ 10)
Worked example: Room: 15 × 20 ft = 300 sq ft | Speaker sensitivity: 90 dB/1W/1m | Active listening, 85 dB average
- Treat the room as a circle: radius = √(300 ÷ π) = 9.8 ft = 2.98 m to the furthest seat
- Loss over that distance: 20 × log₁₀(2.98) = 9.5 dB
- Average power: 10 ^ ((85 − 90 + 9.5) ÷ 10) = 2.8 watts
- Peak power at 12 dB crest factor: 2.8 × 10^1.2 = 44 watts
Power doubling = +3 dB SPL. Doubling distance from speaker = −6 dB SPL.
Crest factor, which is where most wattage advice goes wrong
That 2.8 watt figure is the average. Music is nothing like a steady tone: the peaks run 10 to 15 dB above the average level, and a snare hit or an orchestral tutti demands every one of those decibels for a few milliseconds. Ten decibels is ten times the power. Fifteen is thirty-two times.
An amplifier sized for the average clips on every one of those peaks, and clipping is what actually destroys tweeters. A clipped waveform is closer to a square wave, and a square wave dumps far more energy into the high-frequency driver than the music ever would. This is why an underpowered amp kills speakers more often than an overpowered one.
So: size the amplifier for the peaks, and pick speakers whose continuous rating comfortably exceeds the average. The old rule of thumb of 1–3 watts per 100 cubic feet for moderate levels, or 5–10 watts per 100 cubic feet for live use, is a rough shortcut to the same answer, and it lands in the same place as the peak figure rather than the average one.

Room acoustic factors:
- Hard surfaces (concrete, glass) reflect sound → louder, more reverberant
- Soft surfaces (carpet, curtains, acoustic foam) absorb → cleaner but quieter
- Aim for RT60 (reverberation time) of 0.3–0.5 seconds for music listening rooms
