Vinyl Record Details

Vinyl records spin at specific speeds measured in Revolutions Per Minute (RPM). The speed, size, and groove spacing all affect playback time and audio quality.

Standard speeds:

  • 33⅓ RPM: Long-playing (LP) records. The most common format for full albums. Introduced by Columbia Records in 1948 in the United States.
  • 45 RPM: Singles and EPs. Usually 7-inch format. Introduced by RCA Victor in 1949 in the United States.
  • 78 RPM: The original standard from the early 1900s. Made of shellac, not vinyl. Fragile and heavy.

Standard sizes:

  • 7-inch (17.5 cm): Singles. Usually 45 RPM. About 4-5 minutes per side.
  • 10-inch (25 cm): Originally the standard LP size. Now uncommon. About 12-15 minutes per side at 33⅓.
  • 12-inch (30 cm): The standard LP. About 22-26 minutes per side at 33⅓.

Groove length calculation: A 12-inch LP at 33⅓ RPM has approximately 1,500 feet (460 meters) of groove per side. The groove starts at the outer edge and spirals inward.

How speed affects quality: Higher RPM means more groove passes the stylus per second, resulting in better audio fidelity. This is why 45 RPM records are considered to have better sound quality than 33⅓ RPM. Some audiophile reissues are pressed at 45 RPM on 12-inch discs (2 discs per album).

Groove spacing: LP microgroove spacing runs about 200-300 grooves per inch, and the calculator works from 205. The older 78 RPM coarse groove is far wider, about 110 per inch, which is why 78s hold so little music. Tighter spacing allows more playing time but reduces dynamic range and bass response. Wider spacing gives better sound quality but less time per side.

The 78 column is why the three-minute pop song exists. A 10-inch shellac disc runs about three and a half minutes a side, and once you allow for a run-in groove and a lead-out, three minutes is what a songwriter actually had to work with. The format shaped the music, not the other way round, and the length stuck long after the format did.

Those 78 figures fall straight out of the groove spacing rather than being looked up: 110 coarse grooves per inch across the 2.5 inches of playable surface on a 10-inch disc is 275 turns, and 275 turns at 78 rpm takes three and a half minutes.

Run the same sum on an LP and you get 21 minutes rather than the 26 in the table, and the gap is real rather than an error. Microgroove cutting uses variable pitch: the lathe watches the signal and squeezes the grooves closer through quiet passages, opening them out again for loud ones. A 78 was cut at a constant pitch, so what the arithmetic says is what you get. The 26 minutes is what a good cutting engineer can win from a well-behaved master, not what a fixed spacing allows.
