Aquarium Volume Calculator
Calculate the water volume of your aquarium from its dimensions.
Supports gallons and liters, imperial and metric measurements.
Aquarium Volume is calculated from the tank dimensions:
Imperial (inches → gallons):
Volume (gallons) = Length × Width × Height (all in inches) / 231
Metric (cm → liters):
Volume (liters) = Length × Width × Height (all in cm) / 1,000
Conversions:
- 1 US gallon = 3.785 liters
- 1 liter = 0.264 US gallons
- 1 cubic inch = 0.004329 gallons
Stocking guidelines (general rule):
- Freshwater: 1 inch of fish per gallon
- Saltwater: 1 inch of fish per 5 gallons
Common tank sizes:
| Dimensions (L×W×H) | Volume |
|---|---|
| 24×12×16 in | ~20 gal |
| 36×18×16 in | ~45 gal |
| 48×18×20 in | ~75 gal |
Actual water volume is typically 10-15% less than calculated due to substrate, decorations, and not filling to the very top.
