Aquarium Volume Calculator

Calculate the water volume of your aquarium from its dimensions.
Supports gallons and liters, imperial and metric measurements.

Aquarium Volume

Aquarium Volume is calculated from the tank dimensions:

Imperial (inches → gallons): Volume (gallons) = Length × Width × Height (all in inches) / 231

Metric (cm → liters): Volume (liters) = Length × Width × Height (all in cm) / 1,000

Conversions:

  • 1 US gallon = 3.785 liters
  • 1 liter = 0.264 US gallons
  • 1 cubic inch = 0.004329 gallons

Stocking guidelines (general rule):

  • Freshwater: 1 inch of fish per gallon
  • Saltwater: 1 inch of fish per 5 gallons

Common tank sizes:

Dimensions (L×W×H) Volume
24×12×16 in ~20 gal
36×18×16 in ~45 gal
48×18×20 in ~75 gal

Actual water volume is typically 10-15% less than calculated due to substrate, decorations, and not filling to the very top.
