Dog Age Calculator
Dog age in human years from the UC San Diego methylation model, adjusted for small, medium, large or giant breeds, with the life stage and vet schedule.
Dog age in human years is far more nuanced than the old “multiply by 7” rule. Modern veterinary science uses a DNA methylation model developed by researchers at UC San Diego, which better reflects how dogs actually age biologically.
The scientific formula:
Human Age = 16 × ln(Dog Age) + 31
Where ln is the natural logarithm. That is the whole base model, for every dog, before breed size is taken into account.

Look at how the gaps shrink. The first year alone is worth 31 human years, the next thirteen add only 43 more. That is why a 1-year-old dog is already sexually mature while a 10-year-old and a 15-year-old are not nearly as far apart as the “multiply by 7” rule suggests. Below one year the logarithm runs off a cliff, so puppies are scaled straight from birth up to 31 at their first birthday.
Size correction: the methylation study was built on Labrador Retrievers and carries no size term of its own. Bigger dogs age faster, and they start earlier, so this calculator adds a premium on top:
- Small breeds (under 20 lbs): no adjustment
- Medium breeds (20–50 lbs): up to +1.5 human years, phased in from age 6
- Large breeds (50–90 lbs): up to +4 human years, phased in from age 5
- Giant breeds (90+ lbs): up to +6.5 human years, phased in from age 4. Great Danes average only 8 to 10 years of life
Phasing the premium in over the year that follows each threshold keeps the curve smooth. A dog does not gain four human years overnight on its fifth birthday.
Worked example: A 6-year-old Labrador Retriever (large breed): Base: 16 × ln(6) + 31 = 16 × 1.792 + 31 = 59.7 human years Size premium: one full year past the age-5 threshold, so the whole +4 applies → ~64 human years
What to do with the number
The point of a biological age is that it tells you when to change what you are doing, and the changes are not subtle.

The jump from annual to twice-yearly at the senior line is the one worth acting on. A dog ages roughly four human years between visits at that stage, and the conditions that show up then are far cheaper and far more treatable caught at six months than at twelve.
Note that a giant breed hits “senior” at around five and a terrier not until eight. That is the whole reason a size-blind age chart is misleading rather than just imprecise.
