Kayak Size Calculator
Find the right kayak length and weight capacity based on your weight and kayaking style.
Recommended Kayak
Kayak sizing depends on your weight, paddling style, and intended use. A properly sized kayak is safer, faster, and more comfortable.
Kayak types and typical lengths:
| Type | Length | Best For |
|---|---|---|
| Recreational | 9–12 ft (2.7–3.7 m) | Lakes, calm rivers, beginners |
| Touring/Sea | 12–17 ft (3.7–5.2 m) | Open water, long distances |
| Whitewater | 6–9 ft (1.8–2.7 m) | Rapids, rivers |
| Fishing | 10–14 ft (3.0–4.3 m) | Stability, gear capacity |
Weight capacity rule: Your loaded weight (body + gear) should be 60–75% of the kayak’s rated capacity for optimal performance.
Minimum Capacity = Your Weight / 0.65
Width guidelines:
- Narrow (22–24 in): Faster, less stable — for experienced paddlers
- Medium (24–28 in): Good balance of speed and stability
- Wide (28–34 in): Most stable — for fishing and beginners
Tips:
- Taller paddlers need longer cockpits and higher seat backs
- Add 25–50 lbs to your body weight for gear when calculating capacity
- Test paddle before buying — comfort matters more than specs
