Tire rotation moves tires to different positions on the vehicle so they wear evenly, extending tire life and maintaining balanced handling. The recommended interval and rotation pattern depend on your vehicle’s drivetrain.

Formulas: Miles Until Next Rotation = Rotation Interval − Miles Since Last Rotation Rotations per Tire Life = Total Expected Tire Mileage ÷ Rotation Interval Tire Life Extension (%) = (Rotated Tire Life − Unrotated Tire Life) ÷ Unrotated Tire Life × 100

What each variable means:

  • Rotation Interval: typically every 5,000 to 7,500 miles. Many manufacturers just say “every oil change”, which is the version people actually remember.
  • Expected Tire Mileage: whatever the tire is warranted for, or your own experience with the last set.
  • Rotation Pattern: depends on drivetrain (FWD, RWD, AWD) and on whether the tires are directional or staggered.

A word about UTQG treadwear numbers, because they get misread constantly. A treadwear grade of 600 does not mean 60,000 miles. It means the tire wore at one sixth the rate of a reference tire over a government test course in Texas, so a 600 tire should last twice as long as a 300 tire under the same conditions. That is all it says. Manufacturers assign their own grades, so the numbers compare reasonably well inside one brand and poorly across brands. Use the mileage warranty for a mileage estimate, not the treadwear grade.

Standard rotation patterns:

  • FWD (Forward Cross): Front tires move straight back; rear tires cross to front.
  • RWD (Rearward Cross): Rear tires move straight forward; front tires cross to rear.
  • AWD (X-pattern): All four tires swap corners diagonally.
  • Directional tires: Can only move front-to-rear on same side (no crossing).
  • Staggered fitment: Different front/rear sizes, cross-rotation not possible; may need dismounting.

Tire wear without rotation:

  • FWD front tires wear 2 to 3 times faster than the rears. They steer, they drive, and they carry the engine.
  • Regular rotation equalizes wear across all four, so the set wears out together instead of in pairs.
  • The usual figure quoted for the gain is 15 to 25% more miles, though how much you actually get depends entirely on how lopsided your car is to begin with.

Worked example: Take a FWD car whose fronts last 30,000 miles and whose rears would last 70,000. That is a ratio of 2.3, right in the middle of the band above.

Rotating swaps each tire between the two positions, so every tire spends about half its life wearing fast and half wearing slow. The four then reach the wear limit together, at the harmonic mean of the two lives:

2 ÷ (1/30,000 + 1/70,000) = 42,000 miles

At a 6,000 mile interval that is 7 rotations over the life of the set. The fronts, which would have been scrap at 30,000, now go 42,000, and you buy four tires once instead of buying two twice.

This is also why FWD gains the most from rotation and AWD gains the least. The more even the wear already is, the less there is to redistribute, which is how the same practice produces both ends of that 15 to 25% range.
