How Windshield Washer Fluid Is Calculated

Washer fluid is water plus methanol (sometimes ethanol), and the methanol is the only thing doing the freeze protection. Everything else in the bottle is detergent, dye and a little ammonia.

The distinction that trips everyone up: “concentrate” is not a strength.

A bottle labelled concentrate can be anything from 30% methanol to nearly pure. Two bottles both sold as concentrate, both mixed 1:1 with water, will protect you to wildly different temperatures. So this page asks two separate questions: how much of the tank is concentrate, and how strong that concentrate is. Multiply them and you get the number that actually matters, the methanol percentage in the tank.

Work back from those numbers and the store labels make sense. A jug rated to 0°F is a quarter methanol. That means half a tank of a 50% concentrate, or a quarter tank of the pure stuff. Same protection, half the bottle.

Tank Capacity Reference:

  • Most passenger cars: 0.7 to 0.9 gallons (2.5 to 3.5 liters)
  • SUVs and trucks: 0.9 to 1.3 gallons (3.5 to 5.0 liters)
  • The mix itself: Concentrate Needed = Tank Size × Concentrate Fraction

Worked Example: A 1-gallon tank, a 50% methanol concentrate, mixed at 50/50:

  • Concentrate = 1.0 × 0.5 = 0.50 gallons (1.9 L)
  • Water = 0.50 gallons (1.9 L)
  • Methanol in the tank = 50% of 50% = 25%, which freezes at about -18°C (0°F)

Practical Tips:

  • Never use plain water. It freezes in the reservoir, the lines and the nozzles, and a frozen reservoir can crack the pump housing.
  • Summer formula: about 30% concentrate, with the bug remover doing the real work.
  • Winter formula: whatever gets your methanol percentage below your coldest night, with room to spare.
  • Pre-mixed bottles are convenient but cost two to three times as much per usable gallon as concentrate.
  • Methanol-based fluid can damage paint if overspray is heavy, so rinse promptly.
  • Fill to about 90%, not to the brim. The mix expands as it warms and there needs to be somewhere for it to go.
