What Is Dimensional Weight? Dimensional weight (also called volumetric weight or DIM weight) is a pricing technique used by airlines and express couriers to charge for the space a package occupies, not just its physical weight. If a package is large but light, its dimensional weight will exceed its actual weight, and you are billed for whichever is higher.

This page prices a consignment, not a parcel. Air freight moves in multiple identical cartons on one air waybill, and the chargeable weight is worked out across the whole consignment rather than carton by carton. Tell it how many pieces you have, what one of them measures and weighs, and it returns the chargeable weight of the shipment and what it costs at your quoted rate. The DIM Factor The dimensional weight is calculated by dividing the package’s volume (length × width × height) by a divisor called the DIM factor. The DIM factor represents the density of a “standard” shipment at which a carrier breaks even. A DIM factor of 5,000 cm³/kg means a package with a volume of 5,000 cubic centimeters is assumed to weigh 1 kg. Common DIM factors: the IATA (International Air Transport Association) air freight standard = 6,000 cm³/kg (or 166 in³/lb). FedEx, UPS, DHL Express = 5,000 cm³/kg (or 139 in³/lb). USPS Priority Mail = 166 in³/lb, the same density as the air freight standard.

Rounding, which is where the two calculators on this site part company. An air waybill rounds chargeable weight up to the next half kilo, so 14.4 kg is billed as 14.5. A parcel courier rounds up to the next whole pound or kilo, so the same box is billed as 15. Neither is wrong. They are different contracts, and this is the reason a forwarder quote and a courier quote on identical cartons never quite line up. Both pages print the exact volumetric weight first so you can see where the rounding starts.

Why DIM Weight Was Created Before dimensional weight pricing, carriers were regularly filling their aircraft, trucks, and delivery vehicles with large light packages, hitting their volume limit long before their weight limit. A truck full of mattresses might carry only 5,000 lbs when it could legally carry 44,000 lbs. The carrier earned revenue for 5,000 lbs of space but used 44,000 lbs worth of cargo space. DIM weight pricing corrects this by ensuring carriers are compensated for the physical space used.

The E-Commerce Impact The rise of e-commerce created a crisis for parcel carriers. Amazon, Wayfair, IKEA, and other online retailers ship enormous numbers of large, light packages. FedEx and UPS cut their DIM factors from 7,000 down to 5,000 cm³/kg over successive changes, specifically to increase revenue from these low-density shipments. This change alone added billions of dollars to e-commerce retailers’ shipping costs and pushed many toward negotiated rates and cubic pricing contracts.

How to Reduce DIM Weight Charges The key is eliminating dead space in packaging. Use the smallest box that safely protects the product. Avoid oversized boxes with excessive void fill. Some high-volume shippers use custom-sized packaging or machines that cut boxes to the exact product size. Reducing the height dimension by even 1–2 inches on a large box can drop DIM weight significantly and move the shipment to a lower rate bracket.

Chargeable Weight Calculation The chargeable weight is always the GREATER of: actual scale weight or dimensional weight. If your package weighs 3 kg but has a DIM weight of 8 kg, you pay for 8 kg. The difference, 5 kg in this case, is pure additional cost, and better packaging removes it.

Worked example, a real consignment. Twelve cartons at 60 × 40 × 30 cm, 9 kg each, going on the IATA 6,000 standard.

  • Volume per carton: 72,000 cm³, so volumetric weight is 72,000 ÷ 6,000 = 12 kg
  • Twelve cartons: 864,000 cm³, or 0.864 cubic metres
  • Consignment volumetric weight: 144 kg. Actual weight: 108 kg
  • Volume wins, so chargeable weight is 144 kg, and it is already on a half kilo
  • At $4.20 a kilo that is $604.80, of which $151.20 is the 36 kg of air

That last line is the number worth staring at. A quarter of the freight bill is empty space, and on a repeating shipment it is worth redesigning the carton for.

The density that decides it. Divide actual kilos by cubic metres. Above 167 kg/m³ your shipment pays on real weight at the IATA standard, and below it you pay for volume. The example above sits at 125 kg/m³, which is why volume wins. The calculator prints your figure so you know which side of the line a packing change has to cross.
