Tent Capacity and Comfort Calculator

Tent manufacturers rate their tents by maximum capacity, meaning the number of sleeping bags that physically fit edge to edge with no room for gear. Real-world comfortable capacity is typically 1 to 2 persons less. A “4-person tent” is a good tent for three, and a decent one for two who want their packs inside.

Manufacturer vs real-world capacity:

• Rated 2-person: comfortably sleeps 1–2 (with gear: 1)
• Rated 3-person: comfortably sleeps 2–3 (with gear: 2)
• Rated 4-person: comfortably sleeps 3–4 (with gear: 3)
• Rated 6-person: comfortably sleeps 4–5 (with gear: 4)

Floor space per person:

• Minimum (just a sleeping bag): 0.6 m × 2.0 m = 1.2 m²
• Comfortable (person + bag + pillow): 0.75 m × 2.0 m = 1.5 m²
• With gear (pack, shoes, wet kit): 0.9 m × 2.2 m = ~2.0 m²

Worked example: A tent with 4.8 m² floor area, rated for 3 persons:

• Minimum capacity: 4.8 / 1.2 = 4 persons (bodies only)
• Comfortable: 4.8 / 1.5 = 3.2 persons ≈ 3 persons
• With full gear: 4.8 / 2.0 = 2.4 persons ≈ 2 persons

Vestibule: A large vestibule (covered porch area) dramatically improves livability by storing wet gear, muddy boots, and cooking equipment outside the sleeping area. Look for 1.0+ m² of vestibule per person on multi-night trips.

Height matters: Dome tents and tunnel tents have sloped walls that reduce usable floor area. The manufacturer’s floor area is measured wall to wall at ground level, so usable space is typically 15 to 25% less. This calculator assumes 18%, which is about right for a dome. A tunnel or a cabin tent with near-vertical walls loses less.

Floor area is usually printed on the spec sheet rather than the box. If you only have the dimensions, multiply them: a 210 × 210 cm tent is 4.4 m².
