How candle wax weight is calculated:
Containers are sold by their fluid ounce capacity, but wax is sold and measured by weight. Those are two different things, so the conversion is not one to one.
The core formula:
Wax weight (oz) = Container volume (fl oz) × Fill percentage × Density factor
Where the density factor comes from. Solid wax densities are well documented, and the same numbers are used across our taper and multi-container pages so the three always agree:

That second column is the first one multiplied by 1.0432, because a US fluid ounce of water weighs 1.0432 weight ounces rather than exactly one. It is a small correction and it is the reason beeswax comes out slightly heavier than the volume it fills.
Fill percentage: most candles are poured to 80 to 90% of the container’s volume to leave a lip at the top. 85% is the usual choice.
You may also see a shortcut floating around candle forums: multiply the jar’s fluid ounces by 0.86 for soy and be done. That works, but only because it quietly bundles a fill level of roughly 92% into the number. If you use 0.86 AND then apply your own 85% fill, you have discounted the headroom twice and you will come up about a tenth short.
Worked example:
An 8 fl oz mason jar filled with soy wax to 85%:
- Wax volume = 8 × 0.85 = 6.8 fl oz
- Wax needed = 6.8 × 0.908 = 6.17 oz of soy wax (175 g)
Fragrance oil load:
Soy, paraffin and coconut hold up to about 10 to 12% fragrance by weight, and beeswax closer to 6 to 8%. Most makers settle at 6 to 8%, which is where soy throws best without sweating.
Fragrance oil (oz) = Wax weight × Fragrance load %
For 6.17 oz wax at 8% load: 6.17 × 0.08 = 0.49 oz fragrance oil
Burn time estimate:
- Soy and coconut wax: approximately 7–9 hours per ounce of wax
- Paraffin: 6–8 hours per ounce
- Beeswax: 9–12 hours per ounce (longest burning)
Tips for consistent candles:
- Always weigh wax and fragrance. Measuring by volume is what makes one batch smell different from the next.
- Add fragrance oil at 185°F (85°C) for soy, 160°F (71°C) for paraffin
- Pour temperature: 130–140°F (54–60°C) for container soy candles
- Let candles cure 48–72 hours before burning for best scent throw
- Melt about 10% more wax than the calculator says. A surprising amount stays on the pot, the pitcher and the thermometer.
