Grout Needed

Tile grout quantity depends on the tile size, grout joint width, tile thickness, and total area. Smaller tiles with wider grout lines need significantly more grout than large tiles with thin joints.

Grout coverage formula, derived rather than guessed. Work out the volume of the joints and multiply by the density of grout. Nothing else is needed.

In one square foot of floor, a tile L by W inches owns half of each of its four edges, so it carries (L + W) inches of joint per tile, and 144 ÷ (L × W) tiles fit in that square foot:

Joint length per sq ft (in) = 144 × (L + W) / (L × W)
Joint volume per sq ft (in³) = that length × J × D
Pounds of grout per sq ft = that volume × 0.0842

Where L and W are the tile sides in inches, J is the joint width, and D is the joint depth, which is the tile thickness. The 0.0842 lb per cubic inch is grout at roughly 2.3 g/cm³ including the mixing water, and it is set so a 12×12 tile at a 1/8 inch joint and 3/8 inch thickness lands on 264 square feet per 25 lb bag, which is where the manufacturer coverage charts put it.

Typical grout coverage (per 25 lb bag), at 3/8 inch tile thickness:

  • 12×12 tile, 1/8 inch joint: 264 sq ft
  • 12×12 tile, 1/4 inch joint: 132 sq ft
  • 6×6 tile, 1/8 inch joint: 132 sq ft
  • 4×4 tile, 1/8 inch joint: 88 sq ft
  • 24×24 tile, 1/8 inch joint: 528 sq ft
  • 2×2 mosaic, 1/16 inch joint at 1/4 inch thick: 132 sq ft

Large-format tile really does use that little grout, and it surprises people every time. Doubling the tile side halves the joint length per square foot, so a 24 inch tile needs a quarter of the grout a 6 inch tile does at the same joint width. The bag is almost an afterthought on a large-format floor and the dominant cost on a mosaic wall.

The mosaic row deserves a warning of its own. Mosaic arrives on mesh sheets, and the seams between sheets add joint length that tile geometry alone does not see, so treat 132 as an optimistic ceiling and order generously for anything 2×2 and under.

Grout types:

  • Unsanded grout: for joints 1/8 inch (3 mm) or narrower. Smoother finish.
  • Sanded grout: for joints wider than 1/8 inch. Stronger, resists cracking.
  • Epoxy grout: most durable, waterproof, stain-resistant. Harder to apply.

Grout joint width guidelines:

  • Natural stone: 1/16 to 1/8 inch
  • Rectified (precision-cut) tile: 1/16 inch minimum
  • Standard floor tile: 1/8 to 3/16 inch
  • Rustic or handmade tile: 1/4 to 3/8 inch

Tip: Mix grout in small batches, because it begins to set within 20–30 minutes. The 10% the calculator adds covers what stays in the bucket and on the float, which is more than people expect. Keep one bag in reserve for future repairs too, since matching grout colour a year later is close to impossible.

One consequence of that 10%: for a job that lands near a bag boundary, the calculator will tell you to buy another. A 260 sq ft floor of 12x12 tile at a 1/8 inch joint needs 24.6 lb of grout, which is 27.1 lb with the allowance, so a single 25 lb bag is genuinely not enough. That is not a rounding quirk, it is the reason the allowance exists.
