Email List Value Calculator
Calculate the monetary value of your email list based on subscribers, send frequency, click-through rate, conversion rate, and average order value.
Email list value puts a number on what a subscriber database is worth. It comes up in acquisition talks, in partnership deals, and any time someone has to justify what the list costs to keep.
The primary formula:
Annual List Value = List Size × Revenue Per Subscriber Per Year
Industry rule of thumb: A well-monetized email list generates $1–$5 per subscriber per month, or $12–$60 a year.
Engagement-adjusted formula:
Monthly Revenue = List Size × Emails per Month × Click Rate × Conversion Rate × AOV
Annual Value = Monthly Revenue × 12
The click rate is the input people get wrong, and it costs about a factor of four. What your email platform shows on the dashboard is normally clicks divided by everyone the mail reached, roughly 2 to 5%. Click-to-open rate divides by openers instead and lands nearer 10 to 15%. Multiply an open rate by the first kind and you have counted the opening step twice. The dropdown above tells the calculator which one it is being handed, and the open rate is still used to show how the funnel narrows.
Send frequency belongs in the chain too and is easy to forget. A list mailed weekly is worth roughly four times the same list mailed monthly, at least until fatigue sets in and the open rate starts falling.
What each variable means:
- List Size: total number of active subscribers (remove unsubscribes and hard bounces)
- Open Rate: percentage who open your emails (healthy benchmark: 20–40%)
- Click Rate: percentage who click a link, measured either against everyone delivered (2–5%) or against openers (10–15%)
- Conversion Rate: percentage of clickers who buy (typically 2–10%)
- AOV: average order value of products you promote
Worked example:
12,000 subscribers, 2 emails a month, 28% open rate, 3.5% click rate measured against everyone delivered, 5% conversion, $80 average order value.
- Emails sent: 12,000 × 2 = 24,000 a month, of which 28% open, so 6,720 opens
- Clicks: 24,000 × 3.5% = 840
- Conversions: 840 × 5% = 42
- Revenue: 42 × $80 = $3,360 a month, $40,320 a year
- Value per subscriber: $0.28 a month, $3.36 a year
That is revenue, not profit. Apply your gross margin to get what the list actually contributes: at 40% margin the same list is worth about $1,344 a month, and it is the second figure you should quote when someone asks what an email list is worth.
Benchmarks by list quality (revenue per subscriber per month):
- Barely mailed, or an offer that is not converting: under $0.20
- Ordinary, mailed a couple of times a month: $0.20 to $1
- Well monetized: $1 to $5
- Exceptional niche list: above $5
Watch the units on any benchmark you read elsewhere, because per-month and per-year figures for this metric get quoted interchangeably and they differ by twelve. Everything above is per month.
The example lands at $0.28 a month, which is ordinary rather than poor, and it is what mailing twice a month gets you. Doubling the send frequency doubles the figure, at least until the open rate starts to sag, and that trade-off is the main lever most senders have.
Segmentation matters more than volume, though. Subscribers who get content matched to what they signed up for convert at several times the rate of a single undifferentiated broadcast, and the improvement compounds because engaged subscribers keep opening.
