Essay Length Calculator

Estimate essay page count from word count, font size, and line spacing.
Covers 10pt to 14pt at single, 1.5 and double spacing, with reading time.

Estimated Pages

Essay page estimates are calculated by dividing your total word count by the number of words that fit on a single page. The words-per-page figure depends on your font size and line spacing, since larger fonts and wider spacing take up more room.

Formula:

Estimated Pages = Word Count / Words Per Page

Font Single 1.5 spacing Double
10pt ~600 words ~400 words ~300 words
11pt ~550 words ~367 words ~275 words
12pt ~500 words ~333 words ~250 words
14pt ~400 words ~267 words ~200 words

Every cell in that table is the single-spaced figure divided by the spacing, which is why the calculator only stores the first column. Double spacing halves it; 1.5 spacing takes two thirds of it.

What each variable means:

  • Word Count: the total number of words in your essay or document.
  • Font Size: measured in points (pt). Most schools require 11pt or 12pt.
  • Line Spacing: single, 1.5, or double. Double-spaced halves the words per page.

When to use this calculator: Use it to plan your writing before you start, or to check if your draft meets a page requirement. Students often need to hit a specific page count for assignments.

Practical example: You have a 1,500-word essay in 12pt font, double-spaced. Words per page = 250. Estimated pages = 1,500 / 250 = 6 pages.

Common essay lengths:

  • High school essay: 500–1,500 words (2–6 pages, double-spaced)
  • College essay: 1,500–5,000 words (6–20 pages, double-spaced)
  • Thesis chapter: 5,000–10,000 words (20–40 pages, double-spaced)

The two other figures the result panel gives you

Reading time uses 250 words a minute, which is the usual silent-reading figure for an adult on straightforward prose. Read aloud it drops to about 150, so a presentation script needs the slower number and a marker skimming your essay needs the faster one.

Paragraph count assumes 100 words a paragraph, which is a short academic paragraph. A 1,500-word essay at that rate is around fifteen paragraphs, and if yours has five it is worth asking whether each one is doing a single job.

Both are rules of thumb rather than measurements, and neither changes the page count.

A sanity check against the reference list

The citation calculator counts a double-spaced page as 23 lines. At roughly 11 words a line that is 253 words, which is the 250 this page uses for 12pt double-spaced. The two agree, which is what lets you add a reference list length to an essay length and trust the total.

Tips: Actual page count varies with margins (1-inch is standard), paragraph breaks, headings, and font family. Times New Roman tends to fit more words per page than Arial at the same point size. Always check your assignment guidelines for specific formatting requirements.
