Most scholarships carry a minimum GPA you have to hold to keep the money, checked each semester or each academic year. This works out what your remaining courses have to average to clear that line, which is the thing worth knowing before the semester rather than after results.
Formula:
Quality Points = Grade Points × Credit Hours
Cumulative GPA = Total Quality Points ÷ Total Credit Hours
Required GPA in remaining credits = ((Target GPA × Total Credits at the End) − Quality Points Already Earned) ÷ Remaining Credits
Standard grade point values (US system):

Worked example: Student has earned 45 credit hours with a cumulative GPA of 3.10 (quality points = 45 × 3.10 = 139.5). Their scholarship requires a 3.25 GPA. This semester they are enrolled in 15 credit hours.
Total credits at end of semester = 45 + 15 = 60 Quality points needed = 60 × 3.25 = 195.0 Quality points needed this semester = 195.0 − 139.5 = 55.5 Required GPA this semester = 55.5 ÷ 15 = 3.70
That means the student needs mostly A’s and A−’s this semester to meet the scholarship threshold.
What if the target is unachievable? If the math shows a required GPA above 4.0, the scholarship cannot be saved through grades alone. Options include: appealing to the scholarship committee with documentation, taking a lighter course load, or retaking a failed course where allowed.
Prevention strategy: Check your scholarship GPA requirements at the start of every semester, not after grades are posted. Dropping a course before the deadline (a “W” grade) doesn’t affect GPA and can protect your scholarship if you’re struggling.
