Tree Carbon Offset Calculator: How Many Trees to Plant?

Trees absorb CO2 through photosynthesis and store the carbon in their wood, roots, and surrounding soil. Planting trees is one of the most widely promoted natural climate solutions, so how many do you actually need to offset your footprint?
Two different questions, two different answers
This is worth getting straight before any arithmetic, because the two get confused constantly and they differ by a factor of ten or more.
The first question is about a recurring footprint. You emit some amount every year and you want a standing forest whose annual uptake matches it, indefinitely. That is what this calculator answers, because the input asks for your annual CO2:
Trees needed = annual CO2 in kg ÷ CO2 absorbed per tree per year
The second question is about a one-off amount, a single flight or a single year, absorbed gradually over a stretch of time. That takes far fewer trees, because you are letting them accumulate:
Trees = total CO2 in kg ÷ (uptake per tree per year × years)
Offsetting 10 tonnes a year forever takes 455 mixed-forest trees. Absorbing 10 tonnes once, over ten years, takes 46. Both are correct answers to different questions, and quoting the second one for a recurring footprint is the single most common way carbon-offset arithmetic goes wrong.
The years box here does the third thing: it spreads the planting over time. The total stays at 455; you just put 46 in the ground each year for ten years instead of all at once.
How Much CO2 Does a Tree Absorb? This varies significantly by tree species, climate, soil quality, and age. Younger trees absorb faster during their growth phase. Older trees absorb at a slower rate but store far more total carbon.
Approximate annual CO2 absorption by tree type:
- Mixed forest trees: ~22 kg CO2/year, a reliable average for temperate forests
- Fast-growing trees (eucalyptus, poplar, willow): ~30 kg CO2/year
- Tropical trees (in rainforest conditions): up to 50 kg CO2/year
- Oak trees (mature): ~48 kg CO2/year, and they support high biodiversity too
Area and Land Requirements A single tree needs roughly 4 square meters of canopy space. Multiply your tree count by 4 m² to estimate the land area required. For reference, one acre of typical forest absorbs about 2.5 tonnes of CO2 per year, so offsetting the US average footprint (about 14 tonnes) would take roughly 6 acres of established forest.
Cost to Plant Tree planting programs typically charge between $1 and $5 per tree, depending on the region and organization. Some tropical reforestation programs plant trees for less than $0.50 each. Multiply your tree count by the per-tree cost to get a rough budget estimate.
Important Caveats Trees only offset carbon while they are alive and healthy. Wildfires, disease, logging, or poor land management can release that stored CO2 back into the atmosphere. For permanent offsets, old-growth forest protection and soil carbon strategies are often more reliable. Tree planting is best combined with reduced emissions, not used as a replacement for them.
Worked Example A family with a 20-tonne annual footprint wants to offset it with fast-growing trees (30 kg/year): Trees = 20,000 kg ÷ 30 kg/tree/yr = 667 trees, enough for their growing canopy to absorb that much every year. Spread the planting over 20 years and that is about 34 trees per year, roughly 2,700 m² of eventual canopy.
Note what the 20 years does and does not do. It does not reduce the 667. It means they buy and plant 34 trees a year rather than finding room for 667 at once, and the offset only becomes complete in year twenty. Until then they are partially covered, which the result panel shows as a growing percentage.
