Chore Time Calculator: How Long Will Cleaning Take?

Estimate how long cleaning will take from home size, the chores you pick, how deep you go and how many live there, with each task timed and a fair split.

Estimated Time

Knowing how long chores take helps you plan your week, divide tasks fairly between household members, and avoid the overwhelming feeling of an all-day cleaning marathon. Time estimates vary widely depending on home size, clutter level, number of occupants, and how thoroughly you clean.

How Chore Time Is Estimated

This calculator uses average base times per chore type, then adjusts for your home’s square footage (or metres), the number of people living there, and how deeply you want to clean.

Base Times (per session, for a 100 m² home with two people in it)

Chore Light Clean Standard Deep Clean
Vacuuming 15 min 30 min 60 min
Mopping 15 min 25 min 45 min
Dusting 10 min 20 min 40 min
Bathroom 10 min 20 min 40 min
Kitchen 15 min 30 min 60 min
Laundry (1 load) 5 min active 5 min 10 min
Dishes 10 min 15 min 25 min
Tidying / Declutter 10 min 20 min 45 min
Windows 10 min 20 min 45 min
Ironing (per item) 2 min 3 min 5 min

Laundry, windows and ironing are in the table for planning a week, but none of the five chore sets on this page includes them. Add them yourself if they are part of the day.

Size Adjustment

Time grows a little slower than floor area, because a bigger room is mostly open floor and the fiddly edges do not double with it. The calculator scales each base time by (area ÷ 100 m²) to the power 0.75, so doubling the area adds about 68% rather than 100%. An 80 m² (860 sq ft) flat comes out at about half the time of a 200 m² (2,150 sq ft) house.

People Adjustment

More occupants mean more mess, more laundry, and more dishes. The calculator adds 10% for each person beyond two and takes 10% off for someone living alone. The people box counts who lives there, not who helps; the panel then shows what an even split between all of them would come to.

Worked example: a 120 m² home with three people, full standard clean. The base times add to 160 minutes, the size factor is 1.2 to the power 0.75, about 1.147, and the third person adds 10%. Task by task that is 38 minutes vacuuming, 32 mopping, 25 each for dusting, the bathroom and tidying, 38 for the kitchen and 19 for dishes: 202 minutes, or 3h 22m. Split three ways, about 1h 7m each.

Tips for Faster Cleaning

  • Clean top to bottom: dust before vacuuming, never after.
  • Use a systematic pattern: work room by room, left to right.
  • Keep cleaning supplies in every bathroom to avoid carrying them around.
  • Daily maintenance (5–10 minutes) dramatically reduces weekly deep-clean time.
  • Set a timer. You’ll be surprised how much you can accomplish in focused 15-minute bursts.

Weekly vs Monthly Chores

Not all chores need to be done every week. Vacuuming and dishes are weekly (or daily). Wiping down appliances and cleaning bathrooms thoroughly can be weekly. Deep-cleaning fridges, washing windows, and scrubbing tile grout are monthly or quarterly tasks.
