Grocery Cost per Person Calculator

Knowing your grocery cost per person is the foundation of any realistic household budget. It gives you something to measure against, shows whether you are overspending, and lets you plan for changes: a new baby, a student moving out, guests for a fortnight.

The formula is the easy part:

Cost Per Person = Receipt Total ÷ Number of People
Cost Per Person Per Day = that figure ÷ Days the shop covers
Projected Monthly = daily figure × 30.44 (the average length of a month)

What to put in each box:

• Receipt total. Everything from the grocery store: food, drinks, toiletries, cleaning supplies. Leave out restaurants and takeaway, which belong in a separate line, or your food budget will look far worse than it is.
• Number of people. Whole-person equivalents. A child under five eats about half what an adult does; a teenager often eats more than either parent.
• Days it covers. Be honest here. This is the number that quietly ruins the estimate, because a big stock-up shop covers more days than the week it was bought in.

Worked example.

A receipt of $185.50, four people, covering seven days.

Per person: 185.50 ÷ 4 = $46.38
Per person per day: 46.38 ÷ 7 = $6.63
Projected monthly per person: 6.63 × 30.44 = $201.67
Household monthly: $806.66

That is below the Thrifty plan for an adult ($286), and almost exactly what American households really spend: $207 a person a month in 2024, by the Bureau of Labor Statistics count. The calculator reports both.

USDA food plans for one adult, August 2026 (per person per month):

Each is the average of a man and a woman aged 19 to 50. The USDA prices them for a four-person household and adjusts for others: add 20% for one person, 10% for two and 5% for three, take off 5% for five or six and 10% for seven or more. The calculator applies that adjustment for the number of people you enter, then tells you which plan your figure sits closest to.

Children cost less than these adult figures (a child of 6 to 8 is $304.50 on the moderate plan), so a family with young children reads lower here without spending any less carefully. The USDA revises every figure monthly as food prices move.

Why is ordinary spending under even Thrifty? The plans assume every meal is cooked at home from a nutritious basket. Real households eat out too, $3,945 a year on average, and that money never reaches the grocery receipt.

Ways to reduce cost per person:

• Meal planning before shopping, so the trip follows a list rather than the shelves
• Buying staples in bulk: rice, beans, pasta, tinned goods
• Store loyalty cards and the weekly specials sheet
• Food waste, which is the biggest and least visible one. US households throw away about a fifth of the food they buy, by the USDA’s estimate, and that is a fifth of this number going in the bin
