Income Breakdown

Hourly Rate = Annual Salary / (Weekly Hours × 52)

This calculator converts your annual salary into an hourly wage. It also breaks your income down into weekly and monthly amounts for easy comparison.

What the variables mean:

  • Annual Salary is your total yearly gross pay before taxes
  • Weekly Hours is how many hours you actually work, not how many your contract says. Enter the real number.
  • 52 is the number of weeks in a year. Paid holidays and vacation stay inside this figure, because a salaried employee is paid for those weeks either way.

The 52 is fixed here on purpose, and it is the one thing this page will not let you change. Your contract pays you through your holidays, so the honest hourly value of a salaried job spreads across the whole year, and that is the figure to hold against an hourly job that also gets paid time off. Taking the holidays out flatters the number: a $60,000 salary reads $28.85 an hour across 52 weeks and $31.25 across 48, and that 8% is not money, it is four weeks of leave counted twice.

There is one case where dividing by the weeks you actually work is correct, and that is quoting a contract rate, because nobody pays a freelancer for a fortnight in Greece. The salary to hourly rate calculator takes weeks worked as an input for exactly that, and adds the self-employment gross-up on top. Leave its weeks box at 52 and the two pages return the same number.

Standard reference: A full-time employee working 40 hours per week for 52 weeks works 2,080 hours per year. So a $60,000 salary equals approximately $28.85 per hour.

When to use this calculator:

  • Comparing a salaried job offer to an hourly position
  • Understanding the true hourly value of your time
  • Evaluating whether a side job or freelance rate is worth it compared to your day job
  • Negotiating a raise by understanding the hourly impact

Practical examples:

Annual Salary Hours/Week Hourly Rate
$40,000 40 $19.23
$60,000 40 $28.85
$80,000 40 $38.46
$100,000 40 $48.08

Tips:

  • If you regularly work overtime without extra pay, enter your actual weekly hours (e.g., 50) to see your real effective hourly rate.
  • This calculation uses gross pay before taxes. Your take-home hourly rate will be lower.
  • Part-time workers can enter their actual weekly hours for an accurate conversion.
  • The calculator also shows weekly and monthly breakdowns to help with budgeting.
