The backlog problem

Most people own far more games than they will ever finish. Between Steam sales, Humble Bundles, PlayStation Plus, Xbox Game Pass and the odd impulse buy, libraries have grown much faster than the hours available to play them. Ars Technica ran the numbers across roughly 90 million Steam accounts in 2014 and found that about 37% of registered games had never been launched even once. Nothing since has suggested the figure has improved.

How this calculator works

The calculation is straightforward:

Total Hours Needed = Number of Games × Average Hours per Game Weeks to Complete = Total Hours Needed ÷ Weekly Playtime

Average completion times by game type

Understanding realistic per-game averages helps you set honest expectations:

• Indie / short games: 4–8 hours (platformers, visual novels, puzzle games)
• Action / adventure: 10–20 hours (standard AAA story campaigns)
• Open-world / RPG: 30–60 hours (e.g., Witcher 3, Horizon Zero Dawn)
• MMO / live service: effectively unlimited, so keep these out of the count entirely
• JRPG / epic RPG: 60–120 hours (e.g., Persona 5, Final Fantasy titles)
• Roguelikes: 10–30 hours to see all content

A common backlog average across mixed libraries is approximately 15–20 hours per game.

Gaming without burnout

An hour or two on a weekday and two to four on a weekend day comes to roughly 9 to 18 hours a week, which is what a working adult with other commitments tends to manage. That is the band this calculator calls typical. Trying to force a backlog down faster than that usually ends in the same place: three games started, none finished, and the whole hobby feeling like homework.

The point of working the number out is not to make you feel behind. It is to make the trade visible, so you can drop the twelve games you were never going to play and enjoy the six you were.
