Game Trade-In Value Calculator

Estimate video game trade-in value by title age, condition, and platform.
Returns expected resale value for PS5, Xbox, Nintendo Switch, and retro console games.

Estimated Trade-In Value

Game trade-in value erodes fast — sometimes within weeks of a title’s release. Understanding how stores calculate offers helps you decide whether to trade, sell privately, or hold onto a game a little longer.

Formula: Store Trade Offer ≈ Retail Price × Age Decay × Condition × Platform Factor

For private sale comparison: Net Private Sale = Sale Price − Platform Fees − Shipping

What each variable means:

  • Retail Price: the original new price of the game.
  • Age Decay: less than 3 months 0.55, 3–6 months 0.40, 6–12 months 0.25, 1–2 years 0.15, 2–5 years 0.10, 5+ years 0.07.
  • Condition: Like New 1.0, Good 0.80, Fair 0.50, Poor 0.25 (relative to a clean used copy of the same age).
  • Platform Factor: Nintendo Switch 1.15, PS5 1.0, Xbox Series 0.95, PS4 0.85, other 0.70. Evergreen platforms and titles hold value better.
  • Platform Fees: eBay ~13%, Facebook Marketplace 0% (local) or 5% (shipped).

Worked example: A game released about 4 months ago (the 3–6 month band), originally $50, in Good condition, for PS5:

Store credit ≈ $50 × 0.40 × 0.80 × 1.0 = $16.00 (cash offers run ~20% lower, around $12.80). eBay comparison: ~$32 sale price − ~$8.16 fees (13% + $4 shipping) = $23.84 net.

Strategies to maximize value:

  • Trade within 30 days of release: value is highest then.
  • Nintendo Switch exclusives hold value exceptionally well; trade those last.
  • Bundle accessories (cases, manuals) to negotiate a better offer.
  • Compare at least two stores: offers can vary by 30–50% for the same title.
