Estimated Honey Yield

Honey yield estimation helps beekeepers plan their harvest and understand what to expect from their hives each season. Yields vary widely depending on location, nectar availability, colony strength, and weather. What this calculator gives you is the comb-capacity estimate, which is the one figure you can actually count before the extractor comes out.

Formula: Total honey = Hives × Frames per hive × Weight per full frame × (Capping% / 100)

How it works: A full frame of capped honey weighs about:

  • Deep frame (9.5 inch / 24 cm): 3.6 kg (8 lbs)
  • Medium frame (6.625 inch / 17 cm): 2.5 kg (5.5 lbs)
  • Shallow frame (5.75 inch / 15 cm): 1.6 kg (3.5 lbs)

Those figures were 2.7, 1.8 and 1.35 kg here, which put a deep frame at 6 lbs where the hive yield projection and the honey yield calculator both put it at 8 to 10. They now agree: ten deep frames come to 36 kg, and the honey yield page says a full deep super holds 80 to 90 lbs.

Pick the size you actually run. Most hobbyists put mediums on for honey because a full deep super weighs upward of 40 kg once you add the woodenware, and it has to come off the hive by hand. Choosing deep when you run mediums overstates the harvest by nearly half.

Capping percentage: Bees seal (cap) honeycomb cells with wax once the honey is down to roughly 17–18% water, safely under the 18.6% at which honey ferments. Only capped honey is ready to harvest, because uncapped honey is still too wet and will ferment in the jar.

  • 90–100%: ideal, harvest now
  • 80–90%: ready on the usual rule, though it is worth checking the uncapped cells with a refractometer
  • Below 80%: wait, or test with a refractometer before deciding

The threshold here is 80%, matching the harvest readiness calculator. It used to be 70%, so the same frame could be called ready on one page and borderline on the other.

What to expect per hive over a year, matching the bands on our honey yield estimator:

  • Poor forage (arid, dense concrete, drought year): 10–25 lbs (4.5–11 kg)
  • Moderate forage (typical suburb, green city): 20–40 lbs (9–18 kg)
  • Good forage (mixed farmland, garden-rich suburb): 30–60 lbs (14–27 kg)
  • Excellent forage (rural clover, orchard, strong flow): 60–100 lbs (27–45 kg)
  • First year: usually nothing. The colony is drawing comb, not storing surplus.
  • A strong colony can fill a 10-frame super in about a week during a major flow, which is why you check weekly in June and not monthly.

Factors that affect yield:

  • Location: garden-rich suburbs and park-heavy cities often beat surrounding farmland, because gardens flower in sequence for months while a monoculture field gives two huge weeks and nothing else. Bare concrete and industrial farmland are the genuinely poor sites.
  • Colony strength: A larger worker bee population covers more flowers per day
  • Nectar flow timing: Missing the peak flow (e.g., linden, clover, buckwheat) dramatically reduces yield
  • Varroa mite management: Weakened colonies produce far less honey
  • Queen health: A laying queen producing young bees continuously is essential for strong foraging numbers

Honey weight vs volume: Honey is denser than water. 1 liter of honey weighs approximately 1.42 kg (about 12 lbs per gallon).
