Vegetable garden yield estimation helps gardeners plan food production, calculate cost savings versus store-bought produce, and size their plots efficiently. Yields vary significantly by plant variety, soil quality, climate, spacing, and care, but standard benchmarks provide reliable planning targets.
Yield formula: Expected Yield = Plants × Yield per plant, which is the same thing as Growing Area × Yield per sq ft once you know how densely the crop is planted.
Both views are useful, and they have to agree. A per-plant figure tells you what to expect from the six tomatoes you bought; a per-square-foot figure tells you whether a 4×8 bed is worth building. This table carries both, and the right-hand column is simply the other two multiplied together.

Zucchini is the one that catches people out. Per plant it is far and away the most productive thing on the list, which is why a single plant feeds a household and two plants feed a neighbourhood. Per square foot it is unremarkable, because it sprawls across nine of them to do it.
What the ranges mean. The low end is a first-year bed with ordinary soil and no particular attention. The high end is settled soil, consistent water, and a variety suited to your climate. Second and third seasons in the same bed usually land nearer the top of the range than the bottom, and that improvement is real: it is the compost and the soil life, not the seed.
Water usage estimate: Water per week (gallons) = Growing area (sq ft) × 0.623, which is the equivalent of one inch of rainfall. A 32 sq ft bed wants about 20 gallons a week in the absence of rain, and vegetables would rather have that in two soakings than seven sprinklings.
Worked example: A 4×8 ft raised bed, 32 sq ft, planted with 4 staked tomatoes (16 sq ft), 1 zucchini (9 sq ft), and bush beans in the remaining 7 sq ft.
- Tomatoes: 4 × 10–15 lb = 40–60 lb
- Zucchini: 1 × 8–20 lb = 8–20 lb
- Beans: 7 sq ft × 9 plants × 0.15–0.25 lb = 9–16 lb
- Total: roughly 57 to 96 lb from 32 square feet
Whether that is worth more than it cost depends entirely on what produce sells for where you live and what you spent on soil, seed and water, so run your own numbers rather than trusting a headline figure. The tomatoes are usually where the money is: they are expensive to buy, heavy croppers, and the home-grown ones taste like a different vegetable.
