Estimating lawn mowing time and cost helps homeowners budget for lawn care services and helps professionals price jobs accurately. The key variables are lawn area, mower width, walking speed, and obstacles.

What each variable means:
- Lawn Area: measured in square feet or square meters. For irregular lawns, break it into rectangles and add them up.
- Mower Width (cutting deck): Walk-behind 20–30 inches, self-propelled 21–22 inches, zero-turn rider 42–72 inches.
- Speed: push mower about 2.5 mph, self-propelled 3–4 mph, rider 5–8 mph. In metric that is roughly 4, 5–6.5, and 8–13 km/h.
- The 0.85 overlap factor: a 21-inch deck does not cut a clean 21-inch stripe. You steer into the last pass a little to avoid leaving a mohawk, so the useful width is closer to 18 inches.
- The 1.20 turn factor: the mower is not cutting while it turns around, and neither are you while trimming the tree ring.
Worked example: Lawn: 8,000 sq ft. Self-propelled mower, 21-inch cutting deck, at 3 mph.
Effective width = 21 × 0.85 ÷ 12 = 1.49 ft Speed in feet per minute = 3 × 5,280 ÷ 60 = 264 ft/min Cutting rate = 1.49 × 264 = 393 sq ft/min Straight-line time = 8,000 ÷ 393 = 20.4 minutes With turns and trimming = 20.4 × 1.20 = 24 minutes
That is the number this calculator gives, and it is deliberately not the optimistic one. Plenty of mowing estimates quote the straight-line figure and leave people wondering why a “twenty minute lawn” eats most of an hour by the time the mower is out of the shed and hosed off.
Professional pricing benchmarks (approximate, US, and they move with fuel and region):
- Under 5,000 sq ft: $35–$55 per mow
- 5,000–10,000 sq ft: $50–$80 per mow
- 10,000–20,000 sq ft: $75–$130 per mow
Those include mowing, edging, and blowing clippings off the hard surfaces. Put a rate in the hourly field above and the result panel compares your own time against what a crew would charge. They are US dollar figures and they do not translate: labor rates in Europe or Australia are a different market, so treat the hourly field as the number that matters and these as background.
A season is about 28 mows, which is what the result panel multiplies by. That is roughly weekly from April to October with a few skipped in a dry August. A cool wet summer pushes it to 32 and a drought year can drop it under 20, so scale the season figures if your year does not look like that one.
