Allergy Severity Score Calculator
Score nasal, eye, skin and chest allergy symptoms out of 15, see the ARIA mild or moderate-severe grade, and spot the combinations that need urgent care.
The Allergy Severity Score gives you a structured way to assess how severely allergies are affecting your daily life. Rather than just saying “my allergies are bad today,” this tool quantifies your symptoms across multiple dimensions so you can track trends over time and make better decisions about treatment.
You rate five symptom categories, each from 0 (none) to 3 (severe): nasal symptoms, eye symptoms, skin symptoms, respiratory symptoms, and functional impact. Those five are summed for a total out of 15.
Score interpretation:
- 0–3: Mild, symptoms are minor and unlikely to significantly affect daily life. Over-the-counter antihistamines may be sufficient.
- 4–7: Moderate, symptoms are noticeable and disruptive. You may benefit from prescription medications or allergy testing.
- 8–11: Severe, symptoms substantially impair daily function. Medical consultation is strongly recommended.
- 12–15: Very severe, symptoms are debilitating. Seek prompt medical care.
The bands are this page’s own, a way to compare one day with the next. The grading doctors use for hay fever is simpler, and the result shows it alongside.
What ARIA calls moderate
ARIA (Allergic Rhinitis and its Impact on Asthma), the guideline most allergists work from, does not add symptoms up at all. It asks four questions: is your sleep disturbed, are daily activities or sport impaired, is school or work impaired, and are the symptoms troublesome? A single yes makes the rhinitis moderate to severe. So a runny nose that keeps you awake is moderate by ARIA even if every box here reads 1, which is why the functional-impact question carries more than its three points suggest.
ARIA also asks how often. Symptoms on fewer than four days a week, or for less than four weeks in a row, are intermittent; more than both is persistent. That matters for treatment, and it is something only a daily log shows.
Why track allergy severity?
Allergy symptoms fluctuate with seasons, environments, and exposures. Keeping a daily severity score helps you identify triggers (e.g., pollen counts, pet exposure, dust), evaluate how well a treatment is working, and communicate clearly with your doctor.
For a blocked nose, a steroid nasal spray usually does more than an antihistamine tablet, but it takes several days of daily use to reach full effect. People who try it for two days and give up are the commonest reason it “didn’t work”.
Why the total alone is not enough
A sum hides where the trouble is, and one category matters more than the others. Three points spread across sneezing, itchy eyes and a mild rash is an annoying day. Three points concentrated entirely in the respiratory box means wheezing and chest tightness, and that is a different conversation with a different urgency, even though both add up to 3.
So this calculator flags a severe score in any single category on its own, rather than letting it be diluted by four zeroes. Chest and throat symptoms get the loudest flag, because those are the ones that turn into an emergency.
The other combination it watches for is skin and breathing together. Hives or swelling plus wheezing, a tight throat or a hoarse voice, coming on within minutes to a few hours of a food, a sting or a medicine, is how the World Allergy Organization defines anaphylaxis. Neither symptom needs to be severe on its own.
Important note: This tool is for self-assessment only. It does not diagnose any condition or replace professional medical evaluation. If you have throat swelling, difficulty breathing, or any sign of anaphylaxis, use your adrenaline auto-injector if you carry one and call emergency services now. Do not stop to score anything.
Tip: Track your score at the same time each day, morning is easiest to keep up, for the most consistent data.
