Your Hearing Age

Hearing loss with age is called presbycusis, and it works from the top down. The highest frequencies go first, long before anything you would notice in conversation. That makes the upper limit of your hearing a surprisingly sensitive early indicator: it moves years before speech becomes difficult.

This page takes a measured frequency and tells you which age it corresponds to. It is the reverse of the Hearing Frequency Range Calculator, which goes from age to expected frequency. Both use the same curve, so the two agree: put an age into that one, put the answer into this one, and you get your age back.

How to get the number to enter

You need a tone sweep and a decent pair of headphones. Plenty of free frequency-sweep videos and tone generators exist. Play a sweep from about 8,000 Hz upward at a comfortable volume and note where the tone disappears. That figure, in hertz, is what goes in the box.

Three things ruin the measurement. Phone speakers cannot reproduce much above 15,000 Hz at all, so a phone alone will tell you that you have the hearing of a 60-year-old regardless of the truth. Turning the volume up as the tone fades pushes the apparent limit higher and measures your speakers rather than your ears. And background noise masks the quietest part of the sweep, which is exactly the part that matters.

Between those anchors the estimate is interpolated, which works out at roughly 200 to 250 Hz of loss a year through adult life.

Worked example

Someone aged 35 runs a sweep and loses the tone at 12,000 Hz. On the curve, 12,000 Hz sits between the 45-year anchor (13,000 Hz) and the 55-year anchor (11,000 Hz), halfway between the two, giving a hearing age of 50. That is 15 years ahead of their actual age, which points at noise exposure rather than ageing.

What a high result does and does not mean

Losing the top end is not a disability. The frequencies involved carry no speech and almost no music: above 16,000 Hz you are giving up the mosquito ringtone and the whine of an old television. It matters as a warning sign, not as a loss.

The band worth protecting is 2,000 to 4,000 Hz, because that is where consonants live and where noise damage puts its first notch. A result well ahead of your age says the damage has started. It is permanent, hair cells in the cochlea do not grow back, but it is also not inevitable from here. Only an audiologist with an audiometer can tell you what your hearing actually is.
