Recommended Vaccines

Vaccination schedules are developed by public health authorities to ensure people receive immunity at the optimal age: when they are most vulnerable to a disease, when the vaccine is most effective, and before natural exposure occurs. Schedules are reviewed and updated regularly based on new research and disease patterns.

How Vaccination Schedules Work

Vaccines work by training your immune system to recognize and fight specific pathogens. Some vaccines require multiple doses to build full immunity (primary series), while others need periodic boosters to maintain protection as immunity wanes over time.

Children’s Schedule (Birth to 18 Years)

Children receive the most vaccines early in life because their immune systems are still developing and they are most vulnerable to many diseases. Core childhood vaccines include:

  • Birth: Hepatitis B (first dose), and an RSV antibody shot for babies born in RSV season if the mother was not vaccinated
  • 2 months: DTaP, Hib, IPV, PCV15/20, RV, Hepatitis B (2nd dose)
  • 4 months: DTaP, Hib, IPV, PCV, RV
  • 6 months: DTaP, Hib, IPV, PCV, RV, Influenza (annual from here)
  • 12–15 months: MMR, Varicella, Hepatitis A, Hib, PCV booster
  • 4–6 years: DTaP, IPV, MMR, Varicella boosters
  • 11–12 years: Tdap, HPV series, Meningococcal ACWY
  • 16 years: Meningococcal booster

Adult Schedule

Adults also need vaccines, either because childhood immunity has waned, they missed doses, or new vaccines became available:

  • Annual: Influenza
  • Every 10 years: Td or Tdap (tetanus, diphtheria, and pertussis in the Tdap form)
  • Up to 59: Hepatitis B for every adult not already vaccinated (since 2022)
  • 50+: Shingles (Shingrix), a 2-dose series, and pneumococcal (PCV20 or PCV21), which moved down from 65 in late 2024
  • 75+: one dose of RSV vaccine, and from 50 to 74 if you are at increased risk (heart or lung disease, diabetes, and similar)
  • Pregnant women: Tdap each pregnancy, influenza, and RSV at 32 to 36 weeks (or an antibody shot for the baby instead)

RSV is a single dose, not a yearly one. That surprises a lot of people who assume it works like the flu shot.

The 2026 split, and which schedule this page follows

In January 2026 the CDC cut the diseases its childhood schedule routinely vaccinates against from 18 to 11, moving rotavirus, influenza, COVID-19, hepatitis A and B, meningococcal disease and RSV to high-risk or individual-decision categories. It also dropped HPV to one dose. The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) published its own 2026 schedule keeping all of them routine. In March 2026 a federal judge in Massachusetts paused the CDC change while the AAP’s lawsuit is heard, and the government has appealed.

This page lists the long-standing schedule, which is also the AAP’s. Because the federal position may move again, check your doctor’s or your state health department’s current advice before relying on any one list.
